Taking another break from the chassis and the cold I was flipping trough some books looking for ideas for a tach mount when I stumbled on the picture below. I decided to whittle out a similar piece to compliment the fuel pressure mount I made several months ago.

    The result is this…

Chris is one of these young guys (I guess that makes me old) who is dedicated to building a period perfect lakes roadster---I think he's settled on the 1947-1948 era. He has literally done his homework by sifting through period rodding magazines to make sure that he's getting it right. He will not settle for anything but perfection whether it's in the parts that he's rounded up or the workmanship that he's putting into it. And as you can see he has some very inovative ideas that will really compliment the build. He's always asking questions like "Did they do that back then?" or "What year did these come out?" This is going to be one sweet ride.

just curious-in your picture you can't quite see what you've used to do the engine turned part with.is something i need to do on a project i'm working on.have heard you use wooden dowel with valve grinding paste.can i ask what you use?have tried an end mill and gently touched the surface but looked rather crap.and tried the dowel but not totally convinced.cheers.

    Thanks everyone for the compliments.

I was planning on using Cratex rods for this. I ordered some
but they didn't come in time so I used an abrasive rubber dremel bit I got from McMaster Car... the bit fell of the shank about 1/4 of the way trough the final part so I had to put the rubber part in the drill chuck with about an 1/8" sticking out... I’m anxious to try the cratex sticks. So far I haven’t been able to get perfect results with any of the previous methods I have used. One thing that helped me was to make a checklist for the coordinates of each swirl and check it off. After about 50 it gets easy to get lost!

Man, I love custom machining....if I only had a vertical mill and a band saw and a big garage for all of my machines, I'd be set. Nice work! I'll have to Google Cratex sticks; never heard of them.

I've heard that a dowell rod mounted in a drill press with fine Clover valve grinding compound work well too, though it sounds messy.

    Patrick

PS:I think I'd lose the bottom brass nut/washer and replace it with a brass cap nut.

    Hey Chris,
    Nice work!
The old proverb says,"The way you do one thing is the way you do all things."
I'd bet your ride is sweet?!
Could I borrow that idea for my gauges? I'll give you your due....

Man, I need to hang out at your house more and stop hanging out with Rex, then maybe my stuff will be sweet like yours and not rusty like Rex's.

How did you make the circular cuts for the column and tach?

    Thanks,
