Smile Just Purchased a ONE OWNER From a 73 Year Old Widow

Ok it's not a 32 Ford out of a barn but I thought I would share my probably once in my lifetime buy from a 73 Year Old widow - One Owner 48 year Old Car that has been sitting in her garage for many- many years.

A 1964 Ford Galaxy 500 Fastback with a 390 FE Z Code 300 HP / Auto with less than 72,000 original miles.

Original title, original dealership sales sheet, bill or sale, the bank loan paper and the little payment book she made payments on.

It hasn't run or moved in the last maybe 5 -10 years she guessed, so I did take a chance that the car actually ran. The last time she thought she remembered was when her son in law started it just to see if it would start after sitting so long before that and was years ago.
The car is virgin with normal replaced items of two front headlights ( the other two still have the Ford Script), Belts, hoses, batteries, tires, a brake line and looks like the exhaust has been replaced once. A add on winshield washer motor at the dealership vs the normal vacuum bag . Basically Normal things the dealership or service station said for her to have replaced.

I got it home, check all the fluids etc and oil looked good but I put in a small can of MM Oil in to help lube stuff, took off the coil wire, put in a borrowed battery from my other old car and turned it over a few times to get some oil moving.
Pulled the tank drain plug and nothing came out so I put a gallon of gas in and a splash in the carb and........turned the key over and pumped her a few times but not quite enough gas I'm thinking, so repeated with little more gas down the carb - turned the key and VROOOM she fired up.....
Of Course after sitting all these years the lifters were clicking a little for a while.

I backed it out of my garage and just let it run for a while. Of course a few puffs of smoke for about a minute but slowly cleared up. This thing just needs to have the cob webs blown out of it. The Generator light flickers on and off so I'll look at that closer - but after sitting that long to be expected.

The floors are really solid. The rear quarters have the lower normal crusties along with right behind the rear front fenders but all replacements are available and I do plan to get those replaced and spray her that cool looking gloss Raven black again. I always dug a black fastback with a red interior.

This thing has a 1/2" of dust on it. I can believe it really has been sitting for maybe / probably 5 -10 years with the layer of dust and prior to that with less that 72,000 miles wasn't driven a lot. ( 1,500 miles per year !) She worked as a book keeper ( pre -computer days) at a bank which was only a couple miles from her house.

Enjoy the pictures....... especially the drivers view out the front window . Like I said - Dust !

This was a really cool find and not many one owners left.

It will be interesting if the smoke does clear up. Those cars, with the older oils, and short trips, had more cyl wear.

Patch, and polish the rest, and call it done

Damn, that's a great find. I absolutely love those '60's Galaxies. Black with red interior and a white headliner.... It just doesn't get much better than that. Add to that some black wheels, dog dishes, and the perfect stance. Killer.

Love them '64's. My only other favorite is '62. They look great with Cragars and blackwall tires.

With my twisted mind I would have had the tow truck driver pose it in front of a local scrapyard and then posted pictures and let the howling begin
Congrats on picking a sweet ride.Clean it up and take the seller out for one last ride.
In my experience they really appreciate that.

This car has survived all these years as an original. Keep it that way. Maybe a nice set of era wheels but please no radical modifying, NASCAR or otherwise.

Very nice score! I am more partial to the 63 1/2 as both my brothers drove them (Mark's was a 427 4 spd ragtop with factory radio reverb) but I am warming up to the 64's as more and more of them just seem to be popping into view.

Great score, Cob! '64 Galaxies rule. Check out the Wimbledon White one in my albums. It was my 2nd ever car and I still miss it some 45-plus yrs. since I sold it. It had the rare swing-away steering column option.

Cob that is one beauty and will clean up real nice. Back in the day I was the new car clean up guy at the local Ford dealership and remember cleaning quite a few of those. Beautiful cars. You are one lucky "sumbitch". Have to keep us posted with pics of that beauty.

clean it up, check the brakes, fix the minor rust, and drive it. No modifications needed.

Nice find and great color combo, too. Minimal changes (exhaust, etc.), and just the necessary minor repairs. Then, probably an extra set of wheels and tires (chrome reverse and blackwalls, maybe Radirs and thin whitewalls, etc.) to swap on and off for a change of pace every now and then. Congratulations.

I drove the family to San Francisco when I got my "learner's permit" in 1966 in Dad's '64 Ford...352", A/C, a really nice looking car. I didn't think so at the time, but I'd love to have it back today....
63 1/2s and '64's are all great looking cars.
I'd also love to get ahold of a '64 Country Squire...
Nice find!!!!!!!!!

Nice car. Clean it up and drive it a little at a time to get to know it. Then fix all the little things and keep her original as possible.
Do you know where the wheel covers are?

Tell us a story. Thats a great car and has to be a great story.
I ran into the typical old guy who was gonna restore it some day the other day. The car is a 56 DeSoto wagon. He had a great sense of humor and was a real cool feller. I told him I'd be back with a couple of friends later. We were gonna sit outside his house and sing till he saw it my way. He invited me in and showed me some pictures of when he was a Barbershop Quartet singer at Disneyland. He said He'd get some of the boys and take us to school. I'm not done yet.
Tell us your story please.

Very cool, Mr. Cob! Great color combo and body style.

My high school driver ('95-'97) was a '64 XL 390/auto that my dad and I did a bunch of body work to. Really great cars.

I have a good front bumper still sitting around, if you happen to need one.

Do you know where the wheel covers are?

The Widow said her late husband years ago took the wheel covers off one time when he washed the car. He hung them up on the garage wall to drip dry and left for a short time, when he came back, someone came into the garage and stole the wheel covers right off the wall !

The 73 year old widow always drove the car. Her husband never drove it because he never had a license - ever. When they had kids, they bought a 4 door to haul the kids and as the kids grew up and married and then grandkids again always used the 4 door.
The Galaxy was driven less and less and less.

The daughter I met and said she drove the car only twice years ago.
The son in law only drove it once years ago.

The 73 year old widow lady was the only driver 99.99999 % in her ownership.

Like I said the car is legit original miles.

Cob

Nice find. I love 64's but the parts are so expensive for them, I hope your bumpers are good because they are crazy high.

Nice find of a great car, back in the mid 70s I had two of them, one was a yellow convertible 390 four speed,I paid 90.00 for it, the owner thought the clutch was going bad, adjusted it and it went through 2 years of me giving it hell. Sold it and bought a red 64 fastback with a 390 auto for 300.00, even had Crager mags on it, hose were truly the good old days...

You keep talking about the sweet 73 year old lady. Well she was only 25 when they got that car ... do you think she drove it like a 73 year old lady back then?

Cool find, should be a fun one!

At 25 and single, possibly a 1/4 mile at a time but highly doubtful.

BTW - they didn't buy that car - SHE DID herself in 64.
She got married in 65 a year later.

Very cool car. I had a couple of big paper routes from '64 to maybe '67,and knew all the cars on my route.Lots of 62s,63s,63 1/2s,64s.. All the Galaxie were owned by cool guys who never seemed to mind the little dumbass paperboy looking at their cars. These were new cars then, but I remember a couple of them getting modified along the way. Hubcaps came off,and exhaust sounded much better.
None of my dork customers drove Galaxies.

Edit. Didn't really like the 65s when they came out, even though I drove a '65 Fairlane in high school.

So nice, love those early 60's Galaxies, it looks like the one on the new tv show Fast And Loud other than that one was a 4speed. Great find!!!

An antique parts dealer told me the car he got the most requests for parts for, even back 30 years ago was 63 and 64 Fords. He said lots of people that remembered them as their family cars growing up, wanted to restore them. He was bragged about how much he was getting for NOS front and rear bumpers and he had a pile of them!

There are certain parts for those cars that trade at frightful prices until someone decides to repro them. Then the question gets to be whether the repro is OE-quality.

The trim on the front edge of the hood, for instance. I think it'd reproed now, I managed to find a couple decent NOS examples under $200, but some were going for $500+ on that bay thing.

If anyone has NOS or perfect used tailgate window end-seals or the plastic stone-guard pieces that go between the taillights and the bumper on the wagons, I'd love to hear from you...

Plan to.

Does have some lower quarter crustie rusties that will need replacing.
At some point I will do that and repaint her.
The paint is the old original laquer. Lots of Normal scratches
I'm going to go through a BUNCH of pads buffing her out.

The interior is really sanitary. Runs good - just working out the cob webs etc.

I have a couple different types of wheels I may change every now and then for a cool look ( my 62 vintage Chrome reverse with spiders or my 55 Buick Wires with 2 bar spinner with redlines) but the car will remain stock body engine etc.

Cool Re: Just Purchased a ONE OWNER From a 73 Year Old Widow

Working the dust and cob webs out. Changed the oil and put some MM oil in.
No more puffs of smoke when started. Motor runs good / shifts good.
Have a slight brake drift to the right - will need to bleed and adjust I guess.

I'll buffer this weekend and it will take A LOT of pads to get the dirt and sctratches out of the original laquer.

Oh the joys of old cars !

Yeaaaaaaaa

Man, that's an awesome story and a great find. I have a similar story about the 64 Galaxie 500XL 4 door hard top. It belonged to an elderly lady in Waco, Tx that drove it to church and to the grocery store. Must have been one heck of a lady that needed to get from point a to b quickly because it has a 390fe in it. She passed away and her son inherited it and drove it for a while until he passed away. For 7 yrs it sat in their barn collecting (a lot) dust. I now have it on the road and driving the hell out of it! Too much fun.

That thing is really neat. A next door neighbor bought a brand new 64 Black 390 4 speed. I got to ride in it before it had 10 miles on it. Loved it it was super fast to a 9 year old. Bought my own in 1970. And just recently bought a 1964 4 Door Galaxie 500 XL. Gives me more room to haul Grandkids.

Super nice find! Congrats! A late Uncle of mine had a red 63 1/2 , 390, 3 speed on the column car when I was a kid. My Aunt wrecked the front end, Uncle bought another 63 1/2 that was hit hard in the rear, took front cap and engine and put in his, it was a 427 with two fours! The car was a 4 speed, black bucket seat interior with a console, he wouldn't put the four speed in his or the black interior, he kept the original red bench and three on the tree.
I have traced the car through two owners since he had it, but the trail went cold. I'd buy it in a heartbeat if it is still as I remember it from back then....
