Default Went to Ct. and got me a daily driver! My '51 Merc project.

Ok, I know, this isn't much to look at and frankly doesn't make much of a thread, yet. Hell, even the work I have put in so far only really made one car look way worse than it did before I touched it, but....sometimes you have to make your room messier before it gets clean. Right? That, and Im super excited!

So, took a loooong ride (traffic) up to Bethany Ct. and bought this dreamboat. The plan is to cut if off the Merc floors, which are utterly wasted, and put it on that there '79 Olds you see next to it. The Olds sports the same wheelbase, albeit a little wide in the front, and has a 350/350 I believe, with some highway flyin' gears. I got it from a friend who lives in SC but had the car in NJ, and he said I should restore the car and drive it since it was the sweetest driving car he ever drove. I tried to convey that it would be in fact, unaltered driveability wise, the same car...but I don't think it got through. The problems with these swaps seem to be the front tire clearance, so my plan thusfar is to use some '54 Ford wheel lips I bought from Ether for this very swap years ago, and use some '49-'54 Chevy wheels. I think they will bring the tires in off the fenders about 3/4" per side or so. The problem is this is a 5x5 wheel pattern car (they came in both) so Im figuring a unilug spare should correct that when I swap the rotors to Chevy pattern.

As for the Merc, I am thinking some kind of headlight/tail light business, not sure what yet, and around a 3 1/2" chop, straight pillar, lengthened quarter window and maybe using the '51 back window. I really normally don't like that look but I may be chopping another Merc and donating my '50 back window opening to that car, so whatever I have left I have left.

Obviously rot repair is kinda A-1 priority with this thing, and that coupled with this car being on the back burner priority wise will make it a slow growth thread, but never hurts looking at someone's crappy project!

Here is the ol battle axe.

Straight, nice gaps, rust free!

"Mouse" rod.

This is pretty nice, I think Im going to keep the 51 dash in it.

It's transplant. I hope it doesn't reject any organs, or at least any expensive ones.

Thats about that.

Chris:
51's ROCK, let me know if I can help you with any of my parts. I won't use everything. It will be interesting to follow this thread because of your talent with Merc's and the tech detail you provide during the build.

Congrats on the coupe score! Looks alot like the piece of crap I am going to pick up next month even seems to be the same light blue /rust 2 tone lol! Not sure how rotten this one is below the snow line(pics are from last winter) supposedly the frame is still good.

Looks like we are the only two invited to a "POS blue Merc" party! Wow, I can't get over the similarities! I think you may have a little less rust, but WOW that roof is jacked! What happened, kids I guess? Even that door hangs reverse-lambo style like mine! I looked at mine for a few minutes today, took the hood off, that was about it. The trans was supposed to be overdrive, but I don't think it is, bummer too, I was looking forward to that.

What are your plans? Are you going to keep it on the stock frame? I don't know Id ever go this route again swapping floors/frame, it's been a ton of work thus far and I'm not even into the hard work yet, but it's A. complete, B. was free, and C. the little mechanical shit after it's all together drives me nuts....bolt and nut hunting, radiator hoses, blah blah.

Can't wait to see what you do with this!

I remember thinking my 50 Merc was a challenge, but mine is nothing, when compared to the effort and talent necessary to resurrect these 51s.

That's a tad more rust than some of us are willing to deal with. You may as well plop it on the Olds chassis to save some work as I'm sure that the chassis rot isn't far behind the body decay... or possibly ahead of it.

You are a brave soul, keep us posted on progress.

I am not sure exactly of any plans yet...I have a similar blue 4 door as well lol see below

My original plan was to make one from the 2...but being the fool that I am I could get 2 cars outta them, parts are so hard to find around here for them, small population and the salt air and overall moisture eats metal pretty fast . If the orig Merc frame on the coupe is salvageable I would like to use it and make a nice chopped driver that could be improved over time...the sedans missing a foot or more of the frame on the drivers sidein front of the back wheel, the idiot that I got it from took the motor and wheels off it and left it in the dirt this is how I found it :

I have a pretty nice 85 Impala that I was thinking of using to make a quick and dirty year round beater from the 4 door , although thats what my 47 Ford started out as lol I can get side tracked sometimes ! I am hopefully going to pick it up on the Rememberance day week, I got 4 days off in a row, oh yeah I gotta drive almost 7 hrs to get it The things we do for rust! I will do a thread and post the adventure .

If ya be needing a clean frame, I have a few here. I'm sure it would be a beast to ship, but I have one bare clean frame, if you can find a way to get it to you, it's all yours.

OK, a few days ago I finally got some time to put in to this thing. This winter was brutal, we havent gotten that much snow in our parts the past few years save for last year where we were pounded, and this year followed in fashion. Even where we are by the beach we get less, except for a Noreastern, which there were a few of this year. Everything has been under a ton of snow, now my yard is juuust about melted out.

Moving right along, this thing is an utter pile. The passenger side wheelwell is completely gone..from floor quarter panel lol. Floors are toast. When I bought the car it was supposed to have an OD trans, as it was definately an OD car and freezing cold when I went to get it, I took the guys word. Someone swapped out a regular 3 speed in there at some point. Booo. Then, after doing all the work to strip down that Olds yet not liking the wide track width stance it would provide, I decided to collect some parts to keep it on the 60k original mile frame it was on. I crawled under to unbolt (read-CUT) the last two bolts holding the front sheetmetal off under the rad support, and found this. Frame is trashed up front. Damn. I got the car cheap so I really dont care, its just a setback. I have a drum brake Chevy subframe of unknown vintage that measures out perfect for this, I just have to post a thread and see if anyone knows what it is so I can order steering and brake parts for it. I also have to get a diner tray with plastic food on it and a 'Lost in the 50s' sticker now that my Merc is going to have a Chevy subframe.

I pulled it over to a concrete pad in my yard and rolled over my engine crane. Hooked it up and started twisting the body to get the doors back in their door holes and after some creeking and squeaking, they reluctantly started to fit. I think we will be OK and itll be a car at some point. There is nothing holding the B pillar in and has about a foot of flex in and out, coupled with no inner wheelwell the quarter panel is all over the place, so between twisting and plank of wood it started to take some shape.

Got the inside stripped and here is the starting point. Going to be a lot of cutty/bendy/weldy to make this thing a car again.

This is the money shot. Look at this hot mess haha.

Heres a shot of the other side, I have yet to fool with that at all, this door is trashed. I have some solid 4 door doors I may try and use to fix these, literally tho, I have no plan as of yet. I would love to replace this door, but coming across one under a zillion bucks is unlikely.

I don't like your donar chassis. I'd consider something newer and cleaner like a late clean Crown Victoria or similar. You'll have enough work on the body!

Crown Vic is even worse width wise, it would look more at home going muddin' than trying to be a custom car.

I am going to try and use this Chevy subframe, if anything I will pull the engine and trans out of the Olds donor so it didnt die for nothing.

Somewhere, I think it was here a read a build up of a Mercury on an older square shape CV. I think it fitted well. You can still find really clean ones cheap.

Hey,

Well, at least with this build you don't have to fix someone else's work prior to getting started with the chop/build.

I'd cut out those rotted areas in the oem frame, and stick weld in new metal, way before I'd do another frame swap! The Olds & Clown Vic frame swaps both have their share of engineering shortfalls.

Good luck, and have fun whenever you can!

I'd guess that the frame/floor swaps are a lot of work for the first one, but there are probably guys out there that have done a bunch and know how they are going to cut and fit them. I think my SC-sourced Poncho framed Merc is probably one of those it looks all stuff under the dash. Good luck! You do a lot of this stuff, you should see if you could partner with someone to make patch panels, batches of 20.

The lincoln town car 90 or newer fits those mercs. I have one sitting on a lincoln chassis down the shop right now. doing some parts procurment at the moment for it. The rear end is already bagged for you and its an all Ford lincoln parts list. The wheel wells lined up perfect for the 2 door body. Just saying it might save you some trouble.

Gosh, that is really something. Surely a frame swap couldn't be more work than all the rust repair. I'm no fan of a frame swap just cuz all the cool kids are doing it, but it seems here the decision is nearly made for you. Seems to me making pieces and chunks to fill the gaps on a swap would me lots less metal work than making everything. Any way to reduce the track width on the front of the Olds...narrowed A-arms or something?

Dave, I had thought of that but a quick search on the webernet here gave me nothing in the way of the arms, only thing I had thought of was either swapping the wheels with some bubble Caprice wheels to pull them in a bit. I was thinking I would still have to do the wheelwells etc, all that mess reguardless what frame it was on. I still have time to think about it, but I think all the work and not be crazy about the outcome, idk...

I thought I read this/heard this on the HAMB, but a fast & dirty search didnt turn anything up.... then I see this post!
UVH if you search Craigslist near your zip, your end of the world is lousy with these cars in the 1.5K$ range. I REALLY wish some of the guys doing this kind of work were closer, I'd love to watch & learn for a while.

Thanks guys, I have a Grand Marquis on my trailer at the moment and had a Town Car here, the front is way wide. Yes, it will fit in the wheelwells, but part of the look to these cars are IMO the inset wheels tunneled in to the fenders. Sure, 99 out of 100 guys looking at a Merc on the stock chassis or subframed with discs won't notice it, but I will, and I will absolutely hate it. With using the drum brake Chevelle clip I will be able to achieve the stock appearance of wheels tucked in the fenders, but I also I should be able to attatch the stock column and use a 51 automatic brake pedal....thanks Ether!!...to make the car look factory in and around it. That kind of shit just tickles me pink.

Bummer. That does sound like a bunch of finagaling (is that how you spell that? lol) to get the wheels in. I have the 68-72 Nova clip on my merc, which is supposed to fit nice, but even that is a bit close on the lips when I turn sharp. Guess you are on the right track keeping the stock frame....unless you decide to do an S-10 swap just cuz that's what all the cool kids are doing.

What about jag xj6 series 1 to 3 rims that are offset inwards.
15'' as well.
Chevy bolt pattern.
I have them on mine at the moment.

Dick Dean and Co. put many an Olds frame and floor under 49/51 Mercs along with earlier Pointiac Lemans four door frames.
I think he used the early 80's four door Olds 88 chassis and floor though but that may have been because of cost and availability. The Olds 88's of those years usually have five on 4-3/4 bolt pattern wheels and they aren't as wide as one thinks.

The Crown Vic chassis is too wide for just about anything outside of a Crown Vic and when the guys use the front crossmember under F series Fords it is hard as hell to get tires to fit under them because they are so wide.

Wow dude so much for that.. is that the only bad spot on the frame?? I would try and re plate that area in or at least cut into it and see how thin it really is... shit the miracles you guys perform on saving the bodies shouldnt phase you for doing frame work that just has 1 small hole!!

Look at it this way .Its a 51 Merc tudor body and they are getting tough to find.I know a guy here in town that has one in his pasture with a chop gone wrong and whats left of the roof laying in the dirt next to it.I nag him about selling it to me everytime i see him .I think the chassis floor swap is a good idea for this situation .Please post pics of the swap ...

I just feel like I dont want to go through all that cutty weldy on the frame and still have manual steering and brakes. Brakes I dont care so much about, being disc or drum, but would prefer power at some point, I took a good look at that crossmember and its toast all along the front. Granted I have other ways to go and I have 2 extra frames that are clean..one rolling complete and one bare frame, but I think I wanna do the subframe, I will finally be 'one of the club' haha.

sucks that the original frame is rotted, but you have extra frames so thats good...with some 7.10 firestones, turning will be easier than knobby radials

just think..you can completely restore the extra frame and once that's done, just swap the body, and the wheels will be in the perfect place and in the end you will be driving a 51 mercury rather than a 70s gm product!

haha, you know how we feel about subframes, im just bustin, do what is in your best interest.

DrDave's logic, in the end, wins the prize. I started pulling apart the floor and after I pulled a few body braces out (body mounts) with my bare hands, everything is rotted to death. I started looking around and was going to get the bodymounts off another car, and yadi yadi, I realized that this is utterly insane, so here goes! It's going to be an Oldsmo-Merc-mobile afterall.

Gotta get this thing back together, it's blockin' my b-ball court! I'm 6'5", but not very good, so I try not to play in public view haha.

I have very little time to mess with this, so when I do I will post more pics. That's the Olds frame and floors behind it, I cut the steering column right next to the box, so by the looks of it I can get the stock column mated to it. The way I see it I am up against a 3" difference in track width, roughly, so some Caprice wheels should bring me in the ballpark, and if not I might use those '54 Ford wheel lips on it. We'll see. Here goes nothing!

Thanks my brotha! If'n you go the same route, please don't be an idiot like me when welding in the bracing for the stands and leave enough room to clear the tires when it rolls out. Man I felt like a dunce, had to pop the rear wheels off and slide it with a jack under the pumpkin, going to have to do the same with the Olds to get it under.

But either way, I am committed now. I think it's going to turn out great. I also have extremely little choice at this point.

Good luck with this ambitious project.. That car was not far from my house.. He'd been trying to sell them for a long time. He also had a nicer 4dr that was missing the nose.

Once you get her settled over the Olds frame and tacked into place its gonna look like a car again , I never picked up the coupe I was gonna get...a temp garage I was building got picked up by the wind in the fall and crushed the back of the roof on my 4 door 51, I was so disgusted I couldnt be bothered to go get it, if he still has it I might this summer but that was the best part of my car, and the other one needed the glass...but seeing the fun you are having with these rusty Mercs has the juices flowing again lol !

I think you made the best choice. Like you said, do all that cutty bendy weldy and you still have stock steering and brakes. For really no more work, you are all set up with power steering and brakes. When you have to build everything from your knees down, the choice seems to be made for you. I'm betting even if you can't find narrowed a-arms, some race shop somewhere could fab you some without too much trouble, if you needed them. Once you get caps on, no one will know you have the caprice wheels, so that may get you all you need. The 54 Ford lips are just a bonus....we should put those on every merc anyhow, shouldn't we? LOL

Odd question, but did the guy you bought it from get it from NJ? Granted it looks like a million other rusted out hulks of the northeast, but i could swear that it's one of the cars we pulled out of an old recluse's back yard back in 97(ish) and sold to a dude with big plans up in CT.

We only had a bill of sale though, so if that car has a title, it's not the same car. Eerily similar though.

Car will drive nice, once I have the car back I'll swap on some B-Body sway bars and take vids of me driving 80mph on I90 weaving in and out of traffic.

I think I heard "free parts" uttered. FWIW I'm very interested in stock side window stainless if you have some sets to part with for $.

Maybe I should take a road trip after I get a passport ! I am considering a chopped full kustom sedan delivery project...if I can find some usable roof pieces from something.A friend has a late 50's International panel (kinda like a suburban) that he said I could take the roof off if I want it so I gotta go look at it and see if it might be usable.

Ha! Hey! I don't have much time to hop on here anymore, was relegated to iphones and ipads when my Mac went down awhile back, just screwed together a powerbook last week so I am back on the forum-ing. I actually just cleared the wasps out of this, it's been such a backburner project, I have had zero time to get to it, but I am REALLY hoping if I can move out on some other projects and sneak some time in to get the inner rockers and body permanently mounted so I can move it closer to the garage before winter. This way at least it has a shot of getting some work done to it. It's a total pile, and huge project yadi yadi, but theres an engine, trans, driveshaft, brakes, already in it, so how big can the project really be? We shall see.

Well, late last week after unexpectadly taking custody of another Merc project (turning a Baby Lincoln 4 door into a Merc 2 door) I decided to sell this. Posted it up, got a PM or two, and KoolKemp PMd me asking about the other car. Made me go back and revisit this thread and read it, and I got nostalgic lol.

So...went out Sunday and made some inner rockers, got them all welded in, a and b pillars redone and hooked up the steering and shifting to the stock column tonight. Game on...

Ha, it's just a pile of junk right now but here are some pics nonetheless (at the bottom)

Here's a few pics of the 51 Merc. This is kind of neat. I decided after the rockers were in to take a look into the steering. I knew I wanted the stock steering column but knew it would also be a huge pain in the ballz. Oddly enough, it was pretty straight forward. The Merc steering shaft actually slid right inside this little steering tube thingy. Did some cleaning and marking, cutting, and welding, and you get the drift. Now, I just needed a bearing for inside the cut down Merc steering column, which was no problem as it's 6 pm and dark out in a driveway haha. Luckily, I was able to take the Olds bearing, flip it around, cut some pieces off, blah blah, and lightly pounded it right into the Merc unit. Bolted everything in and viola, violins too...it worked! She steers!

Here it is getting itself welded to the Olds floor. Surprisingly, the doors open and close now! I probably have another day or two of patching and welding in the front and trunk till it's done. The passenger side wheelwell fell off (rot), so I have to put one of those in haha.

Here are some pics of the Lincoln. All I have done thusfar is strip the carcass. I got the front cut off and lined up a '68 Chevelle subframe under it. I did some measuring, and although the track width is perfect, it's going to be a battle to get it fitting right. So...I am thinking of putting the car on a stock chassis with an SBC. The reason for all this mess is a Lincoln is a 122" wheelbase, while the Merc is 4" shorter. Lot of work to be medium pimpin'.

Wheel wells are over rated anyways lol! I really like the steering column set up ,something I want to do with mine if I ever get started on it..never could scrape up the cash to get that rotten coupe this summer, I will try in the spring if he still has it...its about a 5 hr drive 1 way, I am sure if it were closer I would have come up with some way to have it home by now Try a g body front clip for the Linc, thats what FlamedAbone used on his , I think I have found a usable complete G body chassis for my piece of crap ...it only has about half the orig frame left haha !Keep up the great work and the great pics!

Make damn sure that the bottom of the cowl (rust) area gets squeezed back to the correct dimension. Mine was that russsty and I missed that. Makes the door fender hood and cowl gaps look odd.

Good point, I love your Merc. I bet it rides like a million bucks, I am hoping to find out soon! I am thinking since I have the inner rockers in and the A pillars welded, but the floor patching between a pillars not yet done I might loosely hang the front sheetmetal and hood, make sure I haven't missed something big....set up the rad support mount and weld all that mess, then when it's all good weld in the floor patches.

Ha! Dave, the wagon is going, auction ending tomorrow morning. Good riddance to that thing.

Plugging away on this thing when time allows. Starting to look more like a car but man unless you move the drivetrain back about 4" I dont know how folks are doing this without having the radiator bolted to the front bumper.

Here are the Ford wheel lips that will hopefully conceal my inner goldchainer.

Front fender is a lil droopy but it'll get there when I get more bolts in it. Damned if I was going out to a retailer on Black Friday for 6 bolts haha.

Here is the 50 wheel I chucked on after I accidently destroyed the 51 wheel pulling it off. Go me, and Chinese steering wheel puller. The trans shifter and wheel are hooked up to the Olds guts, so thereby cloaking my mulletness.

That's all for now. It's going to be a beat down getting the rest of the front sheetmetal on with a radiator in, but I think I should before the rest of the cowl is welded together, thanks BlakMerk! Sage advice!

I often wondered about the engine placement with this swap is there room there for a full sized rad?...hey I bought a nicely rotton 49 sedan last weekend ! Cant get it home till the spring though, but the 2 sedans will give me enough junk to hopefully build a coupe from !

Chris, since you have to mate the merc firewall to the late model floor pan then why not slide the motor back. Granted you will have to shorten the drive shaft. Use some S10 V8 conversion mounts as they will move it back or you may have enough room on the crossmember to just slide her back. I didnt notice but you could go electric fan too for more clearance. I am probably not telling you anything you dont know but keep up the good work.

Mine runs a swap frame, mid to late 70's GM we believe. PM me if you want any pics or measurements.

Edit: I have less than 3 inches between my radiator and my waterpump and balancer. I'm running a slightly offset 2 & 5/8 electric fan. A regular mechanical was in there and fit fwiw.

My buddy thinks mine has a 4 cylinder pinto rad:

Tristan, I never even saw those S10 mounts! Wow, thanks a bunch man, that might be a solution. I doubt my lazy ass will move the motor if I can get it unlocked, but if I have to yank it, I am going to remount the whole shebang about 4" back. Yeah, the fkng motor is locked up now. I suck at life.

John, damn that is TIGHT! Looks familiar to mine, it's got all the room in the world, everywhere from the tail lights all the way up to the water pump, and the last 18" every piece of available car is fighting to get into the same space at the same time. I will take you up on that for sure if need be, I appreciate the offer. This is unknown territory for me.

Been plugging along on this when I have had time, but time has been pretty rare. My wife's work schedule lightens up a ton in the next two weeks for the rest of the summer, so maybe some evenings I can be a little more Mr. Car and not Mr. Mom. It's SO close to being ready to be driven around the yard.

So...here's all what's been happen was.

I almost bought a '72 Cutlass 4 door parts car with a relatively hi comp motor (compared to my 3a head motor that locked up). Someone beat me to it. Then, soon after discovering this motor was locked, I looked on craigslist, and the guy who bought it, had started stripping it but relisted it for sale! I called him and headed out that evening.

So, needless to say, my Merc now has the '72 Olds 350 drivetrain in it, and while doing it, I moved everything back the needed 4". Everything fits SO much nicer. Got the driveshaft cut and in. Just have to do a few odds and ends and she's ready to run. Albeit ungodly loud, so soon after she spins around the yard my plan is plumb and bleed the brakes, and trailer it to the exhaust shop.

I got a '56 Mercury radiator and radiator support to graft in. It's going to be off centered due to the steering box, but it's a big tank, and should do the job nicely.

I got the trunk done, and welded in a crossmember to act as a bodymount brace between Olds frame rails.

Also, the passenger side inner wheelwell rotted so bad I pulled it out with my bare hand. So, made a new wheel well. Nothing too fancy but just time consuming. Now I have to weld in some patches from the Olds to the Merc. But it's mounted and in there and the car feels pretty sturdy as is.

Also, I had a rotted 50 quarter, but this 50 quarter was way way nicer than the 51 quarter. So, I spliced in a "less" rotted and more straight quarter. Also got some '53 headlight assys.

Enough yipping...here are a few pics.

Starting to look like a car!

And here it is with the '53 Mercs just screwed in.

That thing is looking good. We should start a support group here for those of us raising kids and trying to find time to build cars. Keep plugging away.

Jordan, that thing was parted and when it went to the crusher it weighed around 700 lbs, that's how little was left unused! I wanted to do something with it but while in my yard something lightly hit it and a bondo chunk the size of Texas came off, revealing, after some probing, two completely riveted/brazed and warped quarters. Both upper and lower were trashed. Everything I pulled is sold, and I don't have any extra frames at the moment but if I do come up with one I'll text you.
