In 2003 I completely severed my spinal cord leaving me either wheelchair or bed bound ,unable to use my hands or drive and, as far as I knew then, all done with playing with old cars &bikes. After a year as a spectator at a lot of shows & cruises I used to participate in, I withdrew into my shell and became pretty much a recluse. Fortunately, my wife Jane and best friends Jeff and Karen at Marshalls Fins’n’Chrome convinced me it would be worth a try to adapt something kool. One ’54 Ford Panel and a hell of a lot of clever adaptations by Jeff later, I found myself in the fantastic position of, instead of finding excuses not to go out in a Mercedes van that I had grown to loathe, looking for places to go and re-joining the scene that I missed so much in my truck.
The next step was to make her “mine”, and I put her in the hands of Jim Turnbull and Julie Ware at Royal Kustoms. With my imagination, their considerable skills and some help from Gary Powell, Jeff Marshall, Joe Gaddy, ’Tootall’ Paul, Tim Harrison & my son Danny we built a Kustom, and I’m extremely proud to share the finished item with you. She’ll never be period perfect, as my disability requires too many creature comforts, but I like to think she in some way captures the spirit of late fifties/early sixties show Kustomising in a daily driver. I don’t think the people mentioned above will ever fully understand what their efforts mean to me in terms of quality of life and giving me back an identity that I thought had been lost forever, but I thank them with all of my heart and am proud of the friendships that we have forged throughout the endeavour. If you ever want your Kemp worked on in Europe, these are the guys to see. ![]() ![]() ![]()

That truck is absolutely beautiful, and the freedom it represents is even more beautiful.
