I saw this on your "photo blog" the other day and thought it was a Leatherman, then now I see how small it is. Did you just cut/drill/fit the keys to fit a "tiny" leatherman? Neat idea.

Heh... I'm getting ready for back surgery and as such, my head isn't where it should be. I spent the better part of a week obsessing over my keychain. Because I'm feeling vulnerable (spine surgery and all), I have the urge to have everything with me at all times.

I wanted a keychain that had:

    1. flashlight
    2. pliars/scissors
    3. screw drivers
    4. bottle opener
    5. knife
    6. pen
    etc...

The only thing is, I hate big key chains. So, I had to do all of this and keep it as light as possible. I'll spare you the details, but I got really into titanium.

Anyway, it's a Leatherman micro. I took out the nail file and the nail pick and replaced them with my house key and the key to my po box. I just shaped the key to match the blades they replaced. Presto, instant multi-tool with real functionality.

Here it is all folded up:

    And finally, here's my keychain...

The whole thing ways about half as much as the leatherman micro...

Back surgery...two words that invoke fear and debate.
I avoided it in 2002 after three spinal injections (epiderals) and a facet injection...all of which might provide temporary relief.
If you want, yet, another opinion, give me a PM.
You are too young for surgery...

  8. Maybe a stupid question.....but how would you guys go with these in your pocket on a domestic flight?

I've been pulled up having one of these in my work bag by airport security. I'd actually forgotten it was in there.

  9. Nice tech and all, but how are you going to maintain your manicure?

I always swore no one was gonna operate on my back. Not after all the horror stories I'd heard of unsuccessful back surgeries.
By the time the doctor finally operated on me , I was ready to do it myself with an old rusty butterknife. Luckily I'm the poster child for successful spinal surgery. Good luck with yours...Wishing you are also successful.

Ryan, best wishes for a successful surgery. Hope your recovery is speedy and complete.

  24. Ryan,

I hope yor surgery goes as well as my wife's. A year and a half ago she had surgery on 3 vertabras in her neck. Then, 6 months later, she had 3 worked on in her lower back. We were blessed to have found a young spinal nuro surgeon who has perfected a new procedure using stainless screws and titanium rods. Prior to surgery she was in a wheel chair, nearly paralyzed. Now, a year after the second surgery, she is able to spend hours a week out working in her garden. We go on walks, and she out distances me.

Believe me, I know a lot about backs, having had mine broken in 3 places at El Mirage when I was 17. If your Doc knows his stuff, you'll be fine. Sore for a few months, but that passes.

Good luck, we'll be thinking about you.

Surgery. I don't have a choice fellas. Sure wish I did, but I've been hurt for a pretty long time. I have to do this. It's cool though - my surgeon is a HAMBer.

As for the keychain and back on topic, the ring is welded titanium as are the clips that attach the tools... It's all really light and very pocketable... And yeah, the remote is for the wagon - locks and rear glass.

  28. Guess you didn't get in in time to get an official HAMB key chain - I know a guy that could get you one:rolleyes:

Best of luck on the surgery.

    Dennis

  29. Is the HAMBer also your highly skilled father? Good luck on the surgery.:D
