Default Killed Myself When I Was Young

It's very rare to find any film footage pre-1960 with actual sound attached as the technology wasn't easily obtainable in the day. As such, much of the vintage film compilations that are sent to me leave me wishing for more. Sound is a very importa...

I never raced but have been around racers and race cars my whole life. I don't go to the races to see crashes. Hate 'em, hate the sound of them. Even when no one's hurt, I hate to see the equipment destroyed and money lost.

The guys who drove the cars in this video surely must've clanked when they walked.

Pretty sure it was sent to me from the source... Ed Tilly. I haven't watched all of those and not sure I want to. This one was enough for me.

WOW. That was hard as hell to watch and incredible at the same time. My jaw is still hanging open. God bless seat belts, roll bars and fuel cells... DAMN.

Thanks for sharing, boss. You're right, I don't think the actual sound could have been tolerated.

I can relate to not wanting to watch that kinda thing.

Before I bought my lil hotrod project I was spending 2 weekends a month racing off road bikes here in texas. Ive had my share of hurt and try my best to never watch motorcycle crashes.

A guy had to really be more than a bit nuts to race in those days in those cars. It gives a good look at the race cars though.

A lot of those guys had been through WWII and weren't afraid of anything. God bless them.
Now adays it's kids on skateboards, bikes, rice rockets, etc. doing that stuff.

I'm thankful for modern safety regulations.

It's just crazy that so many people never considered safety cages or belts back then.

And yet the tradidional police still thinks seat belts spoil the "look" Duh. From the day I started driving at 16 I have never driven a vehicle without using them. In all that time, I only needed them once and was very glad they worked as advertised.

And as seat belt users (racers and crazy kids alike) also know, being tightly strapped in drastically improves your car handling skills, as you don't have to hold yourself in the seat when trying to corner or brake and can concentrate more on the finer points of driving. Gary

I second this, no way could i drive my circle track car if the safety equipment didnt have me firmly planted in the seat. you will actually catch yourself pulling yourself to center with the wheel, and if you are using the wheel as leverage to hold yourself in with, you're probably not using it to handle the car properly!

Great point Gary!

I learned years ago from experience that you can't drive from the passenger side and when the car makes that sudden turn to the left, that's where you'll be without being strapped in. I'm now a hard core seat belt user.

I had to turn it off after the first few crashes. The one positive thing that ever came about as a result of those crashes and deaths was vastly improved safety rules and engineering for racing cars that has in some cases been incorporated into production automobile design. Both racing and production automobiles are far safer today than they were half a century or more ago.
