In the early 1960's, Bill Dake and his buddy Jon would pester their parents relentlessly almost every week. If they made enough noise, they figured, their folks would almost certainly drop them off at the drags for a day of speed and power that weeke...

To read the rest of this blog entry from The Jalopy Journal, click here.
That Channeled 36 Ford 5 window with the zoomies pointing upward and chrome reversed wheels on the back has shown me that 36 Fords can look good without fenders on them...that thing has so much attitude. That stance is perfect, the wheels are positioned so well in proportion to the car. not a fan of its hood scoop though, but thats it. love the hood top and the stock 36 grill with the bottom whacked off of it.....that thing rules
That Vic was dubbed the "Dukes Destroyer", a local car here. Sadley it crashed and was totaled. The chassis is Henry J...the Vicky came after the J body was destroyed in a crash
Here's a couple more (crappy) pics of the destroyer. Sorry if this is OT, But here is another car that I think Vern Massie was involved in- this 1940 Ford. These pics are at Deer Park drag strip here near Spokane. I remember this car in a barn when I was a kid. The roof had caved in and the 40 was the only thing holding it up. It was at my good friend Tim Hein's family farm. He later restored the car (most of the paint AND the lettering are still original!). Some of these names- Don Wilbur, Gene Kicha, etc are still around.
Amazing pics........the history of Hot Rods and Customs in the PNW is huge and varied....which made me very happy after I moved here.
WOW! These are some great picts. Chris, I really like the shot of the '40 being flat towed. That's how we did it! You guys are bringing back some great memories. Thanks!
Great pics, I was lucky enough to go to Puyallup once in 1963, some of those photos were probably taken that weekend. It was a Garlits vs Ivo race, Mooneyham and Sharp was there as well. The blown Pontiac roadster looks like Pappy Hartman, The Flathead Dragster is Gerry Anderson, the Willys Pu. with the blown Olds is Lewis and Harry both cars out of the Slo Poks of Vancouver, Wa. I remember the Willys 4 door, always wondered who that was.
Good stuff! Always love seeing more NW history! Pictures 8 and 9 looks a little like the Stellings & Hampshire car. Does anyone know who it is? Here's an ariel view of the track from 1961
Cool stuff! The GM Auto Sales Willys is in there too. Currently residing in a HAMBers shop in Puyallup awaiting resto. Now, how many of you can correctly pronounce Puyallup!?! Hahaha.
Great photos and a few memories. I went out there with my dad a couple of times in the early 60's and with a friend in 1966 to race. That must have been a ride for the faster cars going up over the hump at the end of the track at any speed.
PEW- YALL- UP! I've lived there. Neat town. Great pictures. Never got a chance to go to that track before it closed down. I wish I had.
Grew up there, "Thun Field" (original name of the strip) was my home track...those pics bring back alot of memories, thanks Ryan.
Two guys were standing on a hill over looking a valley...One guy was named Allup, he let a fart and the other said: "pew Allup"...My grandfather told me that, so it must me true.
check out gassermadness.com for more nw history you can still access the old site to view but you will need to register to see the new site
More great pics brought to light on the HAMB. I recall some of the same cars being featured in the mags of the day. Thanks, Cat(on vacation)
Those are my type and style of cars Ryan, you struck a cord with me on this one. Almost makes me want to build another one.....
had a lot of enjoyable nights there in the late 60's watching jerry ruth, the fuel cuda, the alan green camaro and many more.
