Hot Rods What MUFFLER (58 Chevy)

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by fordstandard, Dec 29, 2019.

  1. I have a 58 Bel Air , 283 motor. We are doing new dual exhaust system* what mufflers are out there that are just slightly above the sound or original muffler? I am not into glass packs or deep interior exterior sound for this car.

Probably what they used to call turbo muffler, they are a pancake muffler like a sticker but case is about 12” long or so if you don’t want a glass pack you probably won’t be happy with a chambered contemporary muffler either

Look into stock mufflers that were used on 60's era muscle cars, some had a great sound.

    Hey F,

Here is a link to a story on Corvette Tube Mufflers from Chevy. When we were teenagers, we took off the stock 58 Chevy mufflers and welded on the new mufflers we got from our mechanic friend from Los Angeles. He had some Tube Corvette Mufflers he wanted us to try on our 58 Chevy Impala. If it was OK for us, he was going to stock them in his service garage as a performance accessory item. Straight tubes, no restrictions, easy on, great sound without being loud, and they easily fit in the space provided by the frame.

We took off the old stock mufflers and the complete rear exiting exhaust system for a couple of days. We cruised around for a while with only the tube mufflers and what a race car sound it made. Then, we had the whole system including the rear pipes and exhaust tips welded back in place. It made a very cool powerful sound, as a custom, stock system. Not too loud and allowed the rumble of the motor to give warning to people listening to it idle.

I am not sure if these mufflers are still around, today. But, with the plethora of companies making exhaust systems and selling mufflers, it could probably be found online.

The Corvette mufflers tucked in underneath neatly out of sight. They made a very nice mellow sound with the straight through build. There were no hindrances for this system. The two tips you see below the Impala are the exhaust cut outs for a two separate, dual pipe scavenger system. We thought Lions would allow these as stock items.

But, after complaints from others that could not get them made, the tech committee banned them from the stock classes. Besides, there was no improvement in times/speeds, so we stored them in the garage rafters until we sold the house in 1998. The tubular Corvette Mufflers were allowed as a stock Chevrolet item.
