I was just curious how many threads have made it to 1,000,000 + views. This is what I have come up with, so please add any thread that I have overlooked (I am certain there are some). I will keep the thread title up to date as new threads come to light (original thread title says "22 threads"). It says something about the viewership and what active HAMBers consider most worthy of their time. It's like Bobby Weir sings: But I can tell your future, just look what's in your hand This is what is in our hands. Of course, this is not about "your favorite thread" or what you consider "best thread ever", it is simply a factual observation. Lord knows, some of the greatest threads have not yet reached this milestone (take @erlomd s 1940's period correct hot rods with about 910,000 views). Two of these 22 threads have been closed as noted below (there have to be others that I am missing). As for the Hall of Fame thing, well it's kind of like popular music. You may not like Barry Manilow (how could you?) or ABBA but they do demand respect for what they have accomplished. Likewise, these threads that have garnered at least one million views have hit some kind of HAMB sweet spot, like it or not. The view count is a quantitative, non-subjective metric. And of course, @Dog427435 s thread is the Cy Young of HAMB threads, it is difficult to conceive of this view-count record ever being broken. I wonder if this thread has ever even seen page 3, I doubt it. As Nick Faldo would say, unbelievable. 1) 44+ million: https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/vintage-shots-from-days-gone-by.428585/ (Really, this is an order of magnitude greater than anything else, a class by itself) 2) 15.5 million: https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/drag-cars-in-motion-picture-thread.228509/ (Skip is the only HAMBer with more than one thread on this list) 3) 7.3+ million: https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/vintage-sprint-car-pic-thread-1965-and-older-only-please.236178/ 4) 4.6 million and the thread has been closed for 7 years! Thanks, and thanks to https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/members/s55mercury66.86408/ for pointing this out to me. Operator error, it is fixed now. Also, sure enough, I have already found a thread I missed. Here is #23:https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/photos-taken-before-ww2-history-in-black-and-white.483757/ but it should really be #18 with 1.4 million views. But the only way I can easily add to the original list is to add it to the bottom, so it shall remain #23.
Yes how in the world do you see how many views a thread has And I’m also curious as to what rates a thread to have featured status.
You can see how many replies and views on each thread. At least on the computer. I don't know if that is visible on the phone/app.
Ah, Internet fame, that and a church cruise in trophy will get you...nothing, absolutely zip, zero, nada.
Well Danny you know the threads that keep coming back to the top all the time, by now you can just about recite them by heart. The old closed threads I had in my "watch threads" list.
Well I'm not spending much time watching some TV show, not that there's anything wrong with that. Spend your time however you wish. I will say that doing it my way, that is using a more tedious approach than Ebbsspeed suggested, allows one to obtain an interesting perspective regarding threads in general. For example, far and away the greatest number of threads have relatively small amount of views, as in less than 3,000. In fact a large volume of threads have less than 1,000. How about this for perspective? There are about 418,000 threads on the HAMB and only about 25 of them have over 1,000,000 views. That means for every one thread that gets a million views there are 19,000 threads that come up short, and I mean usually way short. I just find that interesting that's all.
Well it's not about internet fame, it's about HAMB fame. And it speaks to what interests the majority of HAMBers, that's all I'm trying to say.
I thought the same thing. And photos from back in the day. Go Fast is clearly at the heart of this fascination we all share.
None of that stuff to see the number of views shows up when I view the HAMB on my IPhone. And I use the internet not the app.
I'd think that some of those threads get a lot of traffic due to Google searches bringing them up at the top of the list. That and the same people check them every day or several times a day. It is kind of funny in a way but If I click on the link on my Google Chrome quick links thing it brings up the parking at the turkey run page and adds another view to it. Somehow that is what Chrome decided was the page to open rather than the home page.
Guess I'm the only one who finds this interesting. I'm good with that. But hey! Would love to see a word cloud of the HAMB's traffic as it relates to individual threads. (Nod nod, wink wink) So I'll just throw this out there. As of today, the HAMB lists 418,253 threads. Only about 740 threads have a minimum of 100,000 views (only 0.18 %). So, 99.8 % of the threads on the HAMB have less than 100,000 views. And of all these hundreds of thousands of threads, only about 23 have a minimum of one million views (0.005 %). How about that, I say to myself, isn't that interesting. For me, it is a testimony to just how popular these 23 threads are. Oh and for you who might take issue with how I spend my time? Thanks to the tip from @Ebbsspeed, this last analysis took about 15 minutes.
Hey @BrerHair, you missed the Definitive S-10 Frame Swap Vehicle List at 1.11+. (I find it ironic that the thread has that many views, given the contention on this board). It is a locked thread. And the Jungle Pam thread is just shy at 998k.
Thanks for the statistical comparisons and views on same @BrerHair. You do also highlight with this how difficult it can be to create a thread that can captivate interest, generate responses and views. Many times longevity and views/activity are not the focus or motivation of the subject. The other thing is views and involvement are no guarantee of the value or quality of content being conveyed... Being numbers challenged myself it's still an interesting thing you have done here...
I sure do wish the Modified thread would get opened back up, that is what drew me here in the first place.
That list is not accurate the Bellytank thread should be number 1 and automatically in the HAMB Hall of Fame followed a close second by the please name my car for me thread AKA Cum Dumpster. And any number of Germs threads.....Ahhhh I miss the old HAMB.....
OK I added it to the list. I would guess that Ryan was still figuring out how to rein in the wide breadth of car-related stuff that was pounding the board back then. And if I remember correctly there were half as many Mods (or less) back then, making it hard to keep up. Plus Ryan loves cars and he tends toward being lenient. Remember the Big Cleanup, maybe this thread was a victim of that. Jason @Abomination is a great hot rod guy, he was just trying to build a hot rod resource, the fact is this frame swap is a pretty fucking cool way to rebuild an old car and get it street legal and safe. Just fell victim to the Big Cleanup and the recommitment to Ryan's concept of traditional, something that we all should be thankful for in the long run. It is precisely the strict guidelines that make this site so special (that and the beautiful way that Ryan and his team manage the Wild West of web traffic.) Also interesting (to me) that 20 of these 24 threads were created in the three years from 2007 - 2009. Guess that was a sweet spot, but it could also indicate that, on average, it takes 8 to 10 years for a thread to build one million views.
With the exception of Vintage Shots of Days Gone By, It doesn't count when (HRP) Danny has 75% of all the posts on all the threads listed above...… haha Danny. If you want to really break it down further...…Which thread captured the most posts of individual (none repetitive) HAMB Members ? That would be fun to figure out.
Oh I agree with you. Just gave me a chuckle is all. Also, I imagine that the view count continues to climb, even if the thread is locked. Google pushes a lot of lurkers here I bet.
