Projects 1932 commercial grille on model A

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by daylatedollarshort, Feb 7, 2022.

  1. Anyone have pictures of a 1932 pickup grille on a model a ? Not sure I am going that way, but there is one for sale. Both my projects are 30/31. In lieu of pictures, advice is also welcome, my current vision is full hood, full fendered, un chopped, thanks in advance. I did a search there are a couple of pictures. Looks a little bulky to me. Maybe I can ask for a measurement top to bottom while I am at it.

Just my taste but I think 32 truck shells are just to clunky. They just don’t have the lines and look of a car shell.

  3. I have just the opposite thought. The 32 truck grill is not as deep as a car shell.I think they look lighter.I have a truck grill on my 32 PU,and wouldnt swap for a car shell. I have seen model A"s with the truck shell. I like the look. They repop them.....800 bucks! Now the 34 commercial shell that gets used a lot is too heavy looking for my eye. Guess its just a matter of what you like.....after all, you arent building it for us.

  4. Just measured mine. 29-1/2 inches from the bottom center to the center of the Ford emblem. 31-1/2 inches to the top by the cap. the thickness...front to rear is 4-3/4 inches including the area the welting fits in.

    Quoted from Thread above...

"Mounted to the radiator is a new Brookville grill that was grafted with an original 1932 ford commercial grill. The bullnose area of the commercial grill was removed and reshaped to blend into the aftermarket grill. The insert on the grill is an original and then I stamped and fabricated a center chrome trim bar to resemble a Pines Winterfront."

  9. Yeah, thanks Stogy , my search didn’t bring that thread up. I will go look at the grille and make my decision, owning the grille is likely better than money in the bank. Then I can mock it up to see how it looks in place. Thanks Irish Steve for the measurements, I appreciate it.

No problemo...Your Thread helped solidify how different the 32 Commercial is to the 33 34 grills...

I used a '32 commercial grill on my old Sedan Delivery which started out as a '31 Slantwindow 4 door. Stock Model A hood and added slightly modified '34 pickup grill trim.

@daylatedollarshort show us the candidate for the Commercial Grill...you have to supply the Base, Coupe, Sedan, chopped, channeled...what's the vision you have...Robert Stacks Hotrod might have even been prewar, was it?

Most important, if you go the '32 shell route, is to get the lines right. Too many '32 shells on A's sit too high and don't look right.

That's a good point. I had to trim about 1-1/8" off the bottom sides of the grill to lower it and get the lines right.

I've always liked the '32 truck grilles. Living in the Northeast, it was next to impossible to find a decent one do to them rotting on the lower chin. If you've got a good one, I'd use it for sure.

  21. I saw the grille for sale locally, car is a 31 coupe, just in the gathering/thinking stage. There is nothing wrong with the 31 grille, except that the other one showed up for sale, so many options. D9B1B6C4-ABF3-4489-A7B7-6655A2A23BC1.jpeg

Something I'd like to see is the other way round: a '30-'31 AA grille shell on a '32 car. It'd have to be a specific kind of build.

This is on a '28 phaeton that I *just* missed out buying. Huge regret and I hope it shows up again.

Correct. These look out of proportion to me on a model A. Too bulbous

I have a commercial grill I kinda like the look I have been thinking it is bit big but laid back a bit it fits... I have to modify the hood as was acquired from a different project someone else had.

I have a commercial fitted to my coupe , no idea what it came off as it had some funky lower contour where the hood sides would locate . It also had the remains of some chrome plate .. I used it because it was cheap, even cheaper than a reproduction. It fits good, looks the part and was old school cheap and cheerful. Basically used what was laying around ,cheap and available at the time .
