While, the Sprint Cars were on their native racing surface,,, loose dirt,, so I am sure it was almost like driving at home, with 1,000 foot drop-offs Back when Men were Men
Here's some more vintage Pikes Peak footage: NOTE: The opening sequence is from the 1920 event, which Otto Loesche won driving a Lexington Special with a time of 22:25.4 ... and the closing sequence is from the 1934 event, which Louis Unser won driving a Stutz Special with a time of 16:01.8.
This is Bill Kenz's roadster with the Reverse cam Cragar. In 1931 he bought a new Vicky, he quickly purchased a Cragar OHV and after some innovation and thought, he flipped the cam end for end which gave him 4 intake ports and two exhaust ports. I have his original drawings of the intake design in his pocket book . He raced this car at Dupont and Brighton Speedway in the Denver, Colorado area in the early 30's. His Cragar motor was backed by a cheater trans, it had only 2nd and 3rd gears from a 32 trans. On a straightaway, the hopped up banger would run 114mph. In 1936 he ran the roadster at Pikes Peak and got 12th, in 1937 he got a driver and the car finished 6th (that must be the picture at the top?). This head is still kicking ass in Colorado based Art Jennings’ Kenz tribute roadster, he can be found ripping the hills at the Hot Rod Hill Climb or digging ruts at the Hot Rod Dirt Drags. This little motor is one Bitchen Banger for sure! Scotty Lachenauer Photos on August 16, 2016 Scotty Lachenauer Photos on August 16, 2016 HRM Story
