And if filled please tell us what material was used to fill it. i.e., sheet metal, station wagon roof, van roof, etc. And what year/model wagon/van/etc. roof?
Ironic..I was talking about this exact subject last night with my wife about her A sedan project and if she wants it filled or with a original style insert.. I’m sub’d to see what people post up
It looks like there are a lot more folks wanting to see these than there are folks willing to post pix.
I found this address on the Ford Barn that was posted in 2011. This company manufactures an insert for the top. You need to check to see if they are still in business. Walden Speed Shop 1040 Price Ave Pomona, CA 91766 Shop: 909-623-3747 Good luck.
Well, you asked for 30/31 but here’s my 28 Tudor. All wood made by me, stained and cleared. I have two top materials, a canvas for nice weather and vinyl for damp weather. Still working on the tops and retainer systems. Cliff Ramsdell
wish I had pictures of it but I had 30 sedan that I filled the top with 70's dodge van roof. It had a neat stamping in it that was not just ribs stamped, and fit the curve very nicely.
I’m finishing the top stuff now and when it’s done I’ll post up in my build. I’m using a piece of black RV awning channel across the front for the material to slide into and then snaps down the sides and back. I had snaps across the front on the first build but found it could work it’s way loose while driving extended periods on the highway. Cliff Ramsdell
Here are a couple pictures of my 28 Mercury Torpedo Salon (the roof is similar to a 30-31 Ford). I did it myself (with a little help from Ron Mangus) over 30 years ago. The cover is boat upholstery fabric which gives you a choice of colors. I guess I'm partial, but I think it resulted in a nice contrast.
An '86 Toyota minivan roof matches the contours of a '28-31 A Tudor perfectly. Mine will eventually be covered by vinyl for a stockish appearance. Here's the thread with details & more pictures: https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/28-tudor-update-6-steel-roof-covered-by-stock-vinyl.636247/
It was already done when I acquired the car but when I replaced the headliner it looked to me to have been made with 2 pieces of 18 ga mild steel.
I got some conv. top material, bought a wood top kit, and put Velcro on front and rear, snaps down the sides, Velcro on the mid bow at the b pillar.. could open it half way on nice days, close it in rain... Never Leaked a DROP!!!!! Driving 80 mph down the freeway in the rain etc...
Please fill us in on how you attached the Velcro; both to the top material and also the body. And we like pix...
The velcro was sewn on to the top material. The other side was cemented down to the header bow and had a few small tacs installed to ensure never failing. The same treatment at the back... I don't have any pics that I know of when I did it... I sold the car a few years back.... If I find any photos I will post them here. The way I made the sides stronger and have some extra ass, was rolled over the material about 8" and sewed that up also... Line at the outer edge and another one half way then 1/2" from edge... You can kinda see that here in this pic... The front got doubled over also by the width of the velcro. then sewn 1/2" from edge and 2" in also... same treatment in rear...
