I'm happily following along! I have a cousin that ran an upholstery shop, but he is half way across the country from me, so I can't get the mentoring that you are.

 

Made a door panel today. Roll and pleat with piping. 2 inch pleats... learning and having fun.

He is an apprentice. It would be in poor taste for an apprentice, especially a new apprentice to reveal the lessons of his master.

There is still some old world art and mystery in the trades.

Another thing is it is very very difficult to do a tutorial on such a complex subject.
Best Bet.....follow along and maybe something can be picked up. Like all trades like this....it is not as easy as it looks.

 

Sure, happy to share. It's all been done before so no real secrets. There are a couple of a variations that I was shown to making pleats... but this video is a great explanation that is very thorough that a guy posted. His videos are great.

Yes, the flatter plates on that door panel I made are Sid Shavers style. The guy teaching me has a 32 that was upholstered by Sid and the pleats are identical. The are a bit flatter because half inch foam is used instead of the one inch, which is used for the old style looking roll and pleat. Different sewing method for that

Made a quick 50's style show rod steering wheel cover.

Diamonds top sewn

The diamonds are 2 inch by 4 inch. I start with a grid that I make up for myself ....then connect the intersecting points and sew away. The top piece was made first, then the piping is made, and then side boxing. I'm going to make another band of piping for the bottom edge

Maybe you can convince him to teach a weekend-long class like Winfield and Baileigh do.

 

My buddy Nuwt R.I.P. ,who did upholster my hot rods an costums for me,from the late 1950s on,passed on about 25 years ago. So I had too teach my self too use what he had shown me many years back. Maybe a few tips that you find from my tech, will even work with much higher $$$$ tools,then I used.

As a trades instructor for the last 20 years I will disagree with most of what you said.
We encourage our students to share what they have learned if they are able to.

I have found that yes there is still some mystery to trades work however in most cases if you have any hand skill with tools they can be learned.

Doing a tutorial can be difficult that is true because as I have also observed, not everyone can teach.
There are some very skilled tradesmen who could not clearly tell you what they do or how they do it.

A lot of people involved in the different trades are visual learners, that's why pictures and videos along with descriptions are so helpful.

After looking and watching the hands on step is what develops skill, but you need somewhere to start.

The guy doesn't speak English so everything is captioned but his video's are very in depth.

 

Thanks, learning a little about upholstery will be my next challenge.
Bought the Juki walking foot and fitted it with the new servo motor.

 

Sanded the wood and painted the seat frame. Attached the wood with stainless fasteners and did the webbing.

Marked off a webbing boundary with Sharpie which gave me a guide for stapling and cutting excess off

An extra step he showed me was to take a bbq lighter and melt the frayed ends off. You don't see any of this stuff under the foam..like sanding the hard edges off the wood, but it is how he does things and how I'm learning
