About
Hung around local 1/4-mile dirt track in the early/mid-60s and got to know the owner of a pair of '37 Ford coupes running hot flatheads. One of his cars won the season championship the last year he ran flatties ('62 or '63). Bought-up a lot of flathead stuff when the racers switched to overheads the next year. Had a '39 coupe in high school that never quite made it to the street before I went off to college.
After college, bought a '40 Ford Deluxe Coupe with a 3-5/16 x 4" flatty, Offy heads, Edelbrock Slingshot manifold base w/Stromberg 4-barrel and Lincoln dual-coil ignition that I drove to Memphis, Detroit and St. Paul Nationals in early '70s. Still have that car.
Bought a couple sets of Ardun heads for the unheard of price of $1000 for complete engine and $850 for an NOS set of heads back around '71 or '72. and started construction on a mid-engined track roadster.
I was honored to be able to travel to Connecticut back in 2005 to meet George Kudasch, who had worked for Zora beginning in the summer of 1947 as a design engineer. George's first assignment was to complete the design of the Ardun conversion for the "big" engine. A year later, he designed the V8-60 Ardun set. George was a bona fide, old world gentleman and an engineer's engineer. I'm proud to have known him.Interact
