The 53-55 Olds fiestas are classic custom caps and can benefit from an extra set of spinners and a bullet cap in the middle. And not just for customs, Hot rods in the early days before many aftermarket wheels were available look great with a set of spinners...

I love the Olds caps. Put them on my Buick and people ask me why I have Olds caps on a Buick. They are the same people who also ask when I'm putting an LS in it. 20201222_091640.jpeg

    Hey Mark. @Moriarity
That is a great collection of hubcaps, nice symmetrical placement as well. Can you please post a better shot of the red hubcap that has the tiki with the wrench's.
    Thanks.
    From Dennis.

  6. This reminds me that I need to follow up with a guy that lives in the town I work. A co-worker took me over to his house since he is a car guy as well. I have never seen as many cool wheel covers hanging on the wall in one shop in my life. He has all the cool ones and lots of them. The walls were mostly covered with them and then he had likely hundreds just hung up in storage as well. He is in his 70's and has a cool 59 Olds 2 door hardtop mild custom as well as a 59 Impala, 60 Impala convertible, 55 Pontiac convertible, and a 65 Galaxy. The 59 is the car that he drove in his wedding. Anyway, I need to hit him up for a set of wheel covers for my t-bird. :D

I remember following Von Franco and his then show purple 32 coupe on the way to Paso. We made the turn from the 5 to the 126 and the sunlight just caught his flipper caps and they sparkled at the way to Paso...
    Great sight, great memory

  9. Olds 3 Bar flippers were one of the first custom things done to Taboo, lol. They didnt last long for some reason as they were swapped out for 59 Impala hubcaps soon after.

We toyed with running 4 bar Lancer caps when restoring the car, but decided on it needing chrome reverse wheels.

Dja ever notice all the fake wire wheel wheelcovers used on customs in the old little mags? You never see those nowadays. History is rewritten every day.

Not exactly traditional, but I thought Iwould "dress up" the '49 Ford caps I'm going to run on the Cabriolet (avatar).
Some blue dot rings, and some jewels I bought on epay...and way too much free time...

  17. Alchemy, my 56 Merc with Calnevar wire caps in 1960. I loved the caps but they were always falling off, probably why you don't see them much anymore.
Not great pics and kinda hard to see in the car show pic.

When I built my first car (53 Bel Air Hrdtp) in 63 I had to have Lancers. I thought they were cool and if I could find another nice Bel Air I would do it again

Back in '58, my older Brother had a pair of the phony ones on his 49 Merc. Funny story how he got them. Another kid in town, had them on the front of his green'47 Chevy 2 door, he also had a Model T coil hooked up to the chassis. He had been to several places one day, with the offer to anyone that could get them off, they could have them. His method was simple, he and a buddy would sit in the car, with their feet on the rubber floor mat, and when the willing participant would attempt to take them off, he would turn on the juice ! After having lots of laughs, at the expense of others, he stopped at the Strode house. He had to eat Crow, as he watched Brother Dave, remove both of the caps, while getting crap shocked out of him. img20201222_0044.jpg

For the most part they never appealed to me but I gotta say that I think Larry Watsons' 56 Chevy was about the classiest looking mild custom out there.
These wire wheel hubcaps are a bit later though, from mid 60's Chevy.

I got this set of Lyon wire caps at an auction this summer, it's one of those things that was just too cool not to get, but I can't imagine what they would ever look good on, other than the wall. I bet a lot of buyers were disappointed when they ordered these based on a drawing in a catalog and these showed up in the mail 6 to 8 weeks later.

Here's a poorly lit picture of some of my custom cap collection in my shop. One day I'm going to have to buy a real camera.
