Flippers? Spinners? or Discs?

It the custom car world, there are very few ‘requirements’ for a car to meet that description. It doesn’t necessarily need to be chopped, or shaved, or even have unique paint to be a traditional custom, but it will usually have some combination of these elements. However, I’d say besides lowering, the only other must-do element to push a stocker into personal creation is non-original hub caps (or technically wheel covers, in most cases). The easiest solve is to pop on a set of originals or aftermarket stock-style caps from another car, like Cadillac Sombreros, Olds Fiesta Flippers, Dodge Lancers, or Studebaker ‘China Hats’. However, to go Full Kemp Kustom, you’ve gotta run modified caps. Put a big chrome bullet in the center, louver them, whatever it takes to stand out. I found this small Barris article on custom caps from the June 1954 issue of Rod and Custom, and what really struck me was the large number of spinner/ faux knock-off caps he was suggesting as options. Maybe the 1953 Corvette was a big influence on Barris Kustoms?
