I bought this tach on fleabay about a year ago and now it’s time to hook it up. It was advertised as a 6 cylinder marine tach. So I thought it would be perfect for my single seat project running a Dodge flathead six. I stuck it in the dash and ran my wire from the coil to it, once I touched the bottom bolt on the backside of the tach it grounded the coil and the motor died. Is this a tach that needs the box to go with it? Any help would be appreciated.
It looks to me like the longer bolts are for the power and ground, while the one at 11 o'clock might be the input from the coil. You really need more information. Do the polarity and voltage (6 or 12) match? Have you googled the numbers printed on the back (or maybe even the patent number)? If you're not sure of what you have, you are in danger of ruining something. One minute of "Googling" produced this : https://www.stewartwarner.com/product/tachometer-electrical-mechanical-pn-82162b/. Close, but probably no cigar. I would pay particular attention to the message : "For sending unit options, please see the Senders & Sensors" further down the page. section.
Not sure about this one, but a lot of older SW tachs need a signal box to run them. Try contacting sixty7gt500 on ebay, he sells alot of SW stuff, maybe able to help you and provide a box if its needed.
Send these guys a note and they will be able to help you. I have a flathead six and an old SW tach in my Dodge truck and it works fine, they also have great customer service. I believe the box under the hood determines the signal that the tach receives but is replaced by the TachMatch unit. https://www.technoversions.com/TachMatchHome.html
I have a tach with a similar Chrysler face. I have wiring info for it. I am out of town until the weekend. Let me get info to you then. Phil
I saw a couple of these tachs on the auction site. The two long studs are to hold the u bracket to front mount tach on gauge panel. With only one other stud I don't know what to suggest. If it was self contained it would need switched 12 volts positive, ground, and coil negative. I'm not sure how it works with only one stud. Phil

Yeah that doesn't help me much, I don't know crap about wiring. I will have to find someone who knows something about these things.
If this is the correct sender, each wire runs from sender to designated termination point. Top two terminal left to right Light on tach Stud on tach Bottom three terminals left to right Switched 12 volts positive Ground Negative terminal on coil Phil
That seems easy but at $300 plus dollars I would like to know if this is really the part that goes with my tach. Was hoping a Stewart Warner guru would chime in when I started this thread.
Sorry, I am not a SW guru. Just a web searcher. Maybe one of the instrument rebuilders could convert your tach head to operate without a sender box. Might be cheaper than as sender? Phil
I was looking at the classifieds here on the hamb and there was a tach very similar to mine. I contact the seller about some info but didn't get a response. Just thought I'd bump this up and see if anyone knows how to wire this thing up.
Dang....how did I miss this one.....think I have the same in the dash panel with wiring....not sure it's the same unit....pics later.
Thanks man, so it looks like switched power. Ground and the third to coil. Do you know if it’s six or twelve volt.
