This guy came by my house and bought my 368 Lincoln Y block recently. I couldn't believe he had a Lincoln in that little car
Nephews of the Cannon Bros., Rick Cannon and Dave Seely, have said they're thinking of replacing the "Big Lincoln" with a laid over 270 Offy. An Offenhauser was put in the car when it was originally built! They had troubles keeping it running so they put in the V8. I'm not sure the Offy is the engine for our road courses with short straights. Not only that, the vibration of a big four-banger can, not only rattle your teeth; but can dismantle your whole car (or nearly so). "Been there; done that"!
WOW nice car..... Is that Ernie Spragues Farina behind it ? I loved watching that car race in my youth.!!!
I’d just popped over to put my build up on this thread as it’s more relevant here! If anyone wants any more info on the build please let me know and I’ll dig out all the old pics. In the meantime, here was the starting point..... November 2018. Been a lot of swearing since then.
Seen on Facebook today, a 4½-litre special based on a large '20s Austin: No further details as of yet.
Its a 1949 F3 built in Germany by Alfred Feger using Beetle axles. F3 was 500cc, but I've never found anything that listed which engine he used. Interestingly, I saw a listing for a different F3 he was supposed to have raced the same year: If it is the same car, it has been totally rebuilt.
This interesting article on the history of disc brakes popped up on one of my FB pages this AM. I found it quite interesting and thought it relevant to racing specials in the 1950s, if not other light weight racers like oval trackers who were also trying disc brakes in the 1950s. What think? https://bobsblog793.wordpress.com/2...0KBGLpa-jQiR-cZZ45jrqMZVQ34zxR-rPQacs0jmx2Aoc
Built by Trevor Crowe & Murray Baker in 1960 very trick with many wins. Now owned& made a runner once again by my great friend Russell Haines. Took these pics on my recent New Zealand trip. Murray Baker legendary engine builder & great friend.
Great thread. Ive been interested in building a special for a while but I want to be able to use it for something more than Sunday drives. Does anyone know of an organisation or events where you can race specials or prewar race cars in the USA like they do in Europe/ England? I believe the historic race clubs in the US cater to old race cars not new construction cars even if all old parts with no provenance. The knowledge that I could race the car when complete would push me to build one.
From what I can tell, mostly true vintage cars are raced, as they have the log books to support their pedigree. In some cases, the 1/2 million dollar replicas are allowed, I've heard. I'm not so sure about new builds however. Too bad. As an aside, I plan to build my 29 coupe in that vein (with a little oval tracker thrown in for fun), instead doing the expected roadster or single seater. A modern engine will certainly put me out of consideration, however. I suggest you get some subscriptions: Victory Lane, Vintage Motorsport and Classic Motorsports are good for me. Perhaps you can search their web sites for links to the vintage racing sanctioning bodies (they are both regional and national) in the US: SVRA, HSR, SOVERN, VRG, CVAR, HVR, VARA, VDCA, RMVR, CSRG, WHRII, VSCR, VSCDA, VSCCA, PVGP, HMSA, etc.. There are also rally and hill climb groups. Victory Lane has a good list of them, and race dates for the US and elsewhere. There are other groups linked to specific makes, pre-war cars, certain series or brands, too. Too much to list. If you have a big bookstore in your area that has a comprehensive periodical sampling, that might be the first place to go. As a spectator, I've been a member of the HSR and SVRA off and on over the years. Your membership needs will more than likely be determined by where you live, as all groups don't race in all areas. Some groups also have excellent periodicals they produce for members only. FB also has vintage racing sites. There is a great one for Allards and another for Kurtis cars, for example, and others for Speedsters, Hand built cars, etc.. Good luck.
I built mine on top of a T frame. I'm a self proclaimed hack and I have done 98% of the work myself. If I build something and it's passes muster then it will do for me hence my name for the car--——--It L Do Special.
That beats the Hell out of sitting in a lawn chair wearing a Hawaiian shirt by a pastel painted troller queen.
