Power For Winning…

Power For Winning…

We’ve discussed the merits of old print ads and catalogs many times here on The Jalopy Journal. Those of you that got immersed in those conversations probably already know that I’m a huge fan of everything produced by Ed Almquist and his Almquist Speed Equipment Company. Recently, a new friend sent me a mint copy of the 1951 “Power For Winning” catalog. It’s my first and I’m tickled.

A quick history lesson… Ed was stuck on a Navy boat in 1946 when he decided to write about speed and performance to pass the time. Once off the water, he titled his work the “Speed & Mileage Annual” and placed a 1″ ad in Popular Mechanics Magazine. After a couple of weeks, he had collected $200 and had found his calling. The rest, as they say, is history.

Ed went on to convert his momentum gained from the manuals into one of the first (and at the time, the largest) mail order speed shops – Almquist Engineering. He sold gimmicks, honest to goodness speed parts, and, of course, his wonderfully produced manuals and catalogs. By the mid 60’s, Ed was just a down right successful businessman. He sold Almquist Engineering in 1966 and used the proceeds to dabble in other interests. He still resides in Milford, PA – the little east coast town where he started it all.

We really should try to get Ed on the phone for an interview.

In any case, here’s the manual I spoke of in all of its glory. Enjoy.
