Isn't the wiring on instrument clusters fairly generic?

I've got a shop manual for the 54 olds-It's got color schematics in it for wiring, and also trans etc.

I'm at work right now, and it's at home...PM me if you think that the 54 diagram could be of help, and I'll scan it.

    Wow dudes, thanks
I think i can figure it out with those..

i want to figure out where everything goes, some i have gotten, i need to look close at those drawings and see how they had the fuel sender wired up...and a few other things that werent clear with just looking at the back of the cluster

I looked at mine and i have Grey and Yellow for the fuel gauge..(original 56 wires)

im thinking my yellow is the + power to the gauge..and the grey to the sender .

Yes grey is sender, however the yellow im not sure. Easy to test, if yellow has power with key on then thats your Ing. power for gauge. The colors I put up are for another GM 56 model.

well i took a shot at it.. wired the grey to sender, and yellow to power..grounded both of them and got nothing..I ran the sender thru its range and nothing happened..

although when i hooked it up it pegged the gauge at empty, so i know its sensing something

    so now what? dammmit
i never get the easy ones

anyone know if the olds gauges need a voltage drop? if they can run on 12 volts or need to be reduced?

    tried 6V too..nothing

Is the cluster in the dash board when your testing it. Or I should say is the cluster grounded. It needs to be grounded.

Ive decided that the fuel gauge is dead,,innop.
so I am disecting a known good gauge and corrisponding sender, and fitting it back into the cluster
next week i should have a working fuel gauge..wish me luck
