Here's an oddball I just picked up today: looks like a 40-41 packard convertible coupe with a 52 cad rear clip, with a 53 Olds motor and trans. it looks like a typical late 50's custom. anybody recognize it? Thanks Dave
I just got it from the son of the (deceased) owner. He had got it from the builder, but nothing else known. It's been stuffed into a garage for decades, but the license is up to date! it came with the top bows, cad hubcaps (50's vintage) and a few boxes of spare parts. No plans for it yet, gonna try to find out some history. anybody need a project? Dave
I guess they start out looking pretty funky, so adding more funky to it is a reasonable thing to do.... Nice find! can you tell what body style it was originally?
Looks like the ideal playboy Fire Chief's ride! A few photoshopped images attached, hope you don't mind.
The foundation is there but it could use a few refinements. The thing that jumps out is the rear quarters, between the door shut lines and the rear fenders. Taking them down flush with the doors would give a wasp-waisted look that'd make more of the Caddy fenders. Likewise if the beltline were to fall towards the rear fenders it would correct the way the rear fenders look not quite tall enough, which would make the car look longer. A complex section that lowers, straightens, and tilts back the deck slightly would really take this car to another level, but that's serious work. As for the headlights, they already suggest Jaguar E-type, so how about XKE/XKSS-style glass covers?
Very cool. It's a 40 (different side grilles and dash, etc. than a 41). I have a 41 club coupe that I've considered changing into a convertable if I could find doors, w.shield frame. I agree that the (non stock) quarter "bubble" in front of the rear fenders is an odd addition. What are your plans for it?
53 Olds didn't have the wire looms in the valve covers, at least the covers are older then 53. Still could be a 53 engine though with older covers.
I've decided to pass it on to the next buyer. It came in a package with some other "toys" and I'm swamped right now. Have a look in the classifieds. Thanks for the comments. Dave
Here's a rough sketch: Lost the Continental kit, smoothed the rear quarters, and lowered/de-arched the deck a bit.
