I'm closing out my 'Ford at Fifty' article series today, but I thought I would share this great little bit about how the City of Sacramento was growing up, getting bigger and modernizing with curb service for cars. In the perfect world you never need...

To read the rest of this blog entry from The Jalopy Journal, click here.
I dug the Ford at Fifty book out of my stash last night. Really cool book that I have pretty much overlooked for years. Great post - I love(d) those tubes at the bank too.
Jay ... cool stuff! ... really enjoyed this series. the HOTEL EL RANCHO then: ... and now: The City of Dharma Realm Buddhist Monastery
Here's a postcard of the El Rancho. It would make a great backdrop for photographing cars. Does anyone know if it still exists?
Rolleiflex, I was thinking the same thing! I moved to Sacramento about 6 years ago and don't know all the landmarks past and present. It would be cool to take my 50 Ford and take some pictures in the same spots as the pictures in the brochure. I am guessing the hamburger place is gone, like all the others have, but what about the palm reader, or the drive thru bank. I will have to search out the book return. Could be fun, sorta like a treasure hunt.
As for the banks with tubes we still have one in Elk Grove on the corner of elk grove florin and elk grove blvd its behind the shell !
Jay, I posted before that I've had copy of Ford at Fifty since new. I always liked the map on the inside covers, too; did you notice that it was done by Boris Artzybasheff? Boris was a super-realistic illustrator who did a lot of Time magazine covers, and had a wonderful style of "anthropomorphic" illustration of machines:
Nice post.I love seeing stuff like this.Iv been in Sacramento for 11years and never seen this..I will do my reasearch and check it out today on my way home from work
