on an awesome scale of 10 that is a 100. Great read Bob and thanks for posting the detailed pics. Ryan great pics also. It was one of the nicest roadsters in '49 PRC run 1949 or '50
Of the best JJ posts ever. Great work and thank you for bringing it to us guys!!! I love how you ended the story Bob.
Had to come back for more. I changed my mind about Bob. He sucks. I want his job! Man, one of the coolest hot rods of all time being driven by one of the coolest hot rodders....I want his job!
Hahahaha... love the last line about not mentioning the donuts. Great to see that the car is appreciated, and more importantly, DRIVEN! Very cool.
thanks ......go,go,go,rumble, road heat, wind in yer face, can't eat, rooster raintails, rub down, kiss good bye, goodnight.................... and now its off to bed after this swell bedtime story ... pleasant dreams....
Nice "write up" Bob. Not too sentimental but appropriaetly appreciative of the genre. If the word iconic can be applied to any hot rod this is it.
You drove the Khougaz roadster! You drove it! That car speeding down the course in the black and white photo, long, long ago? You drove it. Damn.....
Man, this whole post made my day. What a story, and what an honor. Its really fantastic to see such a historical car out on the road stretching its legs. Simply awesome.
I was concerned the goose bumps would not go away as they raised during the reading and viewing of this cool story. But have found they go down a while after viewing and reading, although thinking about the scene or reviewing it does cause re-occuring conditions. Outstanding coverage of a super car, Thanx a bunch!! ~Sololobo~
Hey, I am thrilled that the car is being driven!!! So much better than languishing in a museum..........I need to talk to the new owner if anyone can help me............I put 5,222 miles on that car after I found it in Khougaz's rafters and had it resurrected by Dave Simard. I remember vividly how it feels.......it's harder to turn left than right........I had it up to 125 mph in northwest Colorado with a police escort during the Colorado Grand in 2004..........it went pretty quick around the track at Laguna Seca too........can't remember the date it went 142+ mph, I'll have to look at the timing tag........again......keep drivin' it!! I did a whole lot with it in five years, but there's lots more that could be done!!! Dr. Mark R. Van Buskirk
Does not get any better than this. Great post Ryan, great story & pics Bob, great restoration Dave, great video Miller, absolutely awesome car. And a big thank you to this fantastic "owner" for loaning it out. No way the car could have looked this good back in the day . . . is there? And now you're dragging up more history, thanks for sharing your story Lakester32.
Bob, Dr Mark VanBuskirk was who restored the car at Dave Simard's shop. He shipped the car to me to care for until it was shown at the Eyes on Design show at the Edsel Ford Estate in 2005 (I think). I got to drive that car a couple of times while it was in my possession here in Detroit. It was surreal to have it in my driveway and garage... After reading your article I'm amazed to have felt the same way when I was driving it. Although I am very jealous you drove it on such a cool anniversary! I never really told anyone about it, but it certainly was one very cool memory. Mark really did a job on that car when he had it restored. He showed it for a while, and then, road raced it and really hammered it for a season or two. Then he sent it back to Dave Simard for a re-fresh, and eventually sold it. Do you know it brought $285.000.00 that first time it sold! Thanks for that post man. Very very cool! He really has a fondness for theses early cars with history. He now owns another historic race car. It is a '29 roadster, and believed to have been built by Dawson Hadly (Dawson was the 2nd owner of the Pierson Bros coupe) it was the Barlow muffler car in '54 and raced at Bonneville that year and in '55. It's also on the cover of the Oct 1951 Hot Rod magazine. (yellow). It was also race in SoCal while owned by Don Prieto and was flathead powered. He had a '54 hemi put back into the car by Don. I've been lucky enough to help him race the car at Bonneville the last two years trying to be the fastest driver in the car. The speed to beat is 174. He went 150 in 2008, blew the engine in 2009, and we're heading back this year to see if we can do it with a fresh mill.
This car is just perfect! I knew about it before, but you getting to drive it is really something! Geez, Bob, with all your recent frame work, tech stuff, etc... I'd forgotten you were known for music and writings as well. Damn good story here!
it was 380K.........the last time it sold to the current owner it was a bargain at 214K............there's alot of old photos in the Rodder's Journal #22...........Mark
Ryan/bobbleed ... This has gotta to be the best darn Blog/Thread of 2010! ... very, very cool ... thanks for sharing your stories, pics, & video of one of my favorite Deuce Roadsters!
Lakester32 ... let me be the first to welcome you to the H.A.M.B.!!! ... it's a fantastic source of information about our hobby and will provided you with hours of entertainment ... I encourage you to continue to contribute to this thread (as well as the many others about the Khougaz roadster) ... It would be great if started a thread on the Dawson Hadley/Barlow Muffler '29 Roadster (or any of the other cars you have owned ... past or present). EDIT: I just noticed that you have been a HAMBer since April 19, 2006 ... and that you waited over 4 years to make your first post! ... don't be so shy from now on!
Well now we know what the AMBR should really be! And the music, I thought I was the only one that might put Beethoven and hot rods together. Perfect fit in my book.
When I first saw this awesome Hot Rod at the LARS years ago. that sound stopped me dead in my tracks. Low and behold, the Khougaz Roadster! Just seeing it cruise through the gates was enough to make you feel good inside. Great write-up Bob Bleed. I envy you!!! Ken
