When I was preschool age I would visit my grandfather who had a garage with midget race cars, machine tools, and old garage equipment in it. The building had end grain wood block flooring (looks like oily bricks) and overhead shafting than powered equipment like in an old mill. I spent a lot of time sitting in the race cars and looking at the old cars (30's and 40's) behind the garage. That was a big influence.

For an occupation I've been a lilfe long mechanic starting at about 14 working in my uncles power equipment and motorcycle shop. I worked for 17 years in garages and in a college automitive program for the past 23 years. I've taught automotive technology, welding, autobody and a little metal frabricating.
