The Early Bird

The Early Bird

Despite the spacious rear tire to fender gap, the oddly bobbed rear fenders, and the showy upholstered body panels, I’ve always loved this car. To me, it screams what an early 1960’s era car should scream – LOOK OVER HERE! But it does this in a way that I think a lot of modern renditions don’t. A simple powder blue paint job contrasted by bright white upholstery and a great profile. It’s a cute look that was surely interrupted by the crackle of the cammed 335-inch T-Bird motor. That’s all it takes gentlemen.

This ’28 coupe was built by Larry Ready and was featured in the April, 1961 issue of Hot Rod Magazine. I think the aforementioned look is obtained mostly through restraint – not only stylistically, but mechanically as well. I love the Y-Block choice, but from there Larry chose to go with a ’39 toploader as well as a banjo rear. A modern build would have more than likely called for a more driveable (not in my opinion) 4-speed and a 9-inch. That’s all well and good, but in my opinion those choices would have hurt this car and I wouldn’t be dreaming of driving it as I am right now.

Enjoy:
