Art Chrisman’s Solid Sedan

Art Chrisman’s Solid Sedan

When you list out the top 1936 Ford model choices for an early traditional Custom, you might start with the rakish Roadster, 3 or 5 window coupe, perhaps even the Slantback Tudor. How about the Tudor Deluxe Touring “Humpback” Sedan? Not unheard of, but little less likely. Ryan’s post about the passing of Art Chrisman included a video that showed his 1936 Ford post-war custom, an sure enough it’s that exact body type. Digging further it turns out Art’s car was featured in the March 1951 issue of Hot Rod (the last black & white cover, btw). In classic Chrisman fashion, he built this family sedan for both “Show” AND “Go”, turning nearly 110 mph at El Mirage with a hot V8 and a Columbia 2 speed rear end. The subtle ’36 was likely a bit of a ‘speed parts testbed’ for his more famous racers that would follow. Read the brief article below for more details on this sweet chariot, as it only solidifies that Art Chrisman was a genuine hot rod legend in everything he created.
