In Color

George Barris Chevrolet

Color could possibly be the most personal (and sometimes important) decision you make while building your hot rod or custom. Regardless of stance and hardware appointments, color sets the tone and texture of the final product. Think about a few of the more common options:

Black: Basic, utilitarian, and on occasion… sinister.
Red: Racy and fast.
White: Blank and clean.
Sea Foam Green: Fun, cute, innocent, and the 1950s.
Washington Blue: Traditional, historic, thoughtful…

I could go on, but why bore? The point is that color can go a long way to defining what your car is and where you are headed with it. The decision really speaks volumes about the decision maker and what he sees as his car’s purpose. It’s these little intricacies in our hobby that I really dig observing…

Last weekend at the Round Up, there was a guy standing in line just in front of me as I was attempting to get my third hot dog of the day (that spicy relish was the shit!). He was loud mouthy and just generally fun as he explained his plans for the evening with another guy who was much more subdued and quiet. After we all got our food, I happened to notice the cars that each went back too…

The loud guy? A gorgeous chopped and bright candy red Merc.

The quiet guy? A basic black ’39 Deluxe… Super simple, but just as cool.

It’s interesting to go back and look at all of the different colors of cars you have had… You can actually learn quite a bit about yourself that you might not have really realized.
