Projects Young guys first hot rod

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by Tyler_holzwarth, Sep 21, 2018.

  1. I love the 33-34 Ford pickups, I like the way the grille shell slants back. A friend of mine had one in high school with a 283 and had a cross-ram intake on it with the carbs sticking out of the sides of the hood. I got inspired to build one similar after that. It took me 30-40 years, but I finally built mine, only I used a 348 with 3X2s. Love your truck, and I like your plans for it. Its going to be the beginning of a life long experience.

I'm building a 32 pickup with a 8ba merc myself. Looking forward to seeing how yours comes together.

Looks like you have the tranny adapter for it already. Looks very straight.

Very cool truck!! I'll be watching.

  8. You'll need a 39 trans with cross cut gears for it to last a stock box will break pretty quick.

  11. Just a bit of trivia. There were two different lengths of torque tubes for the 1933-34 vehicles. One for the 4 and one for the V8. The pickup probably started life with a 4 but there is no way of knowing what you have now. Since it looks like there was a SBC adapter there from before you will probably be OK. One would probably work better than the other in terms of clearance in the engine compartment but I don't have the measurements. Maybe search the archives here and on fordbarn? That truck is an excellent starting point. Using the original 283 distributer (not one of the larger newer ones) will probably only require a small dog house in the firewall, don't get carried away. Remember you will probably need the early starter (1955 and probably a couple of more years). If you decide to upgrade the steering look into the F100 truck units. Welcome to HAMB, I think you will fit right in.

Put your general location in your profile, you can never tell how and when it might pay off.

Hey guys, I'm Tyler's friend helping him with the truck. We decided to buy the '32-'47 stock disc and pressure plate, and Tyler's gonna redrill the flywheel. This is what he wants isn't it?

Does it come with the clutch disc too? Bolt in and ready to go?

They sell all the parts. Will need a ford to Chevy pilot bushing as well.

Ask them about the starter and flywheel that you will need.

We've got the correct starter and flywheel already. Tyler is going to have the flywheel surfaced tomorrow

Don’t spent too much on a resurface. I bought a new one for $87.

I re-surfaced and re-drilled the flywheel for my stock ‘34 pressure plate now it just needs to be put on the engine. If all goes as planned it should be running this weekend.

Long style vs. Borg & Beck bolt patterns. This style was on the '33 engine???
Yes, it'll work, but what was a 'Merc type' pressure plate drilling doing on a '33 flywheel?
I trust one of our other 'senior members' will enlighten me...

I'm not senior to Mike, but I do know that it's not a '34 pressure plate.

This clutch was in the truck with a flathead so we know it should work. I assumed it was the stock one, so I guess I lead tyler astray! Lol

  27. Welcome and great project - I know with flatheads you need to balance the flywheel and pressure plate before install. Is it the same with an sbc to stock drivetrain setup?
