Y block Tripower - What works best

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by sobastrace, Mar 17, 2006.

  1. this is for all the Y block experts on the HAMB

What should I be looking for at the swaps? I have seen all kinds of manifolds and carbs. What seems to be the best detup for the 272 Y blocks?

I really want to keep the motor looking old school like it was done in the 60;s.

What works for me is the Edelbrock 553 with 3 94's. Due to a mere touch of insanity, however, I have removed this from my 292 and will attempt to replace the Holleys with 3 97's over the summer. The 557 is the better flowing intake... look for that. I don't doubt that the 94's will ultimately be the carb of choice... but I just have to try the Strombergs.

Stay away from Offy, the flow is bad.

Edelbrock has several choices depending on head port size. The 553 is a match for the 55-6 heads and the 573 for later heads. The 573 flows the best and can be used on older heads if you port them to match the intake.

I run a 573 with 94's on a warm 292 with 56 ECZ-C heads that I reworked. Very responsive using a ECG Y Block carb in the center and smaller venturi flathead carbs on the ends.
