I pulled the valve covers off tonight for the first time. Heres what I saw....
Oil is a little dark ( I will change tomorrow )but I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't completely totally sludged up...
Not bad for a 50 year old engine I guess. I truly believe that the truck is a 44000 mile truck. I have documents that seem to match all up to that.

What do you guys think ???
Anything specific I should look for ??
I'm certainly not an expert on these engines...or any other for that matter...lol

    Pics are below.....

Looks like a well-cared for engine.

Very likely a low mileage creampuff, you sure won't find many as clean as that.

What are you looking for? Is there any particular problem you are having with it? If not, I would say make sure all the rockers are oiling, wash out the covers (not the heads), reinstall with new gaskets and enjoy driving it. Thats a great looking truck !

    Thanks guys.
I have only driven it about 100 miles since I got it last year, but this is the first time I really "looked" into it.
Reman, Thanks, thats exactly what I will do.
I'm not having any issues, I'm just a big rookie on the yblock and wasnt really sure what I'd find in there...lol

That looks awesome. I can't remember how many times 'back in the day' you'd pull a valve cover and find yourself staring at perfect mold of the valve cover in waxy sludge build up. Paraffin based non-detergent oil, short trips, and cold weather were engine killers.

If ypu have a Y block that is oiling the rockers. You have a good one. Somebody took care of his truck.

As old Y blocks go, those pictures look like it's in the top 10 percent.

That ol' girl has a lot of years left in 'er!
Might want to adjust the rockers while you have it opened up.
