Anyone know if the raised white raised area shown on the attached picture can be shaved or ground away to end up with a narrower whitewall? The tires are from Coker 5.60-15 Firestone. WW QUESTION.jpg

  2. I suggest you watch the Coker tire video on you tube. It shows them making the tires. Might help you decide whether it can be done or not. My first thought is no because of how the tire is constructed but I can't be 100% sure.

  3. I believe you are correct in your thinking. HRP

You can shave the rib but it would still be white.

Was afraid that would be the case. Looking at the top edge, the white portion did not look very thick, so was hoping. Thanks for the reply.

I've painted and vinyl dye'd tires and they have held up, if it needs to be black I think I'd just very carefully mask it off and spray it black with vinyl dye. You'll have to touch it up if you kiss any curbs but otherwise it'll be fine.

When you grind a raised white letter tire to reveal the white, the black on top is very thin, but the white layer is thick. I think you'd have to cut a ton of rubber off of the whitewall to get to the black rubber underneath. I've had a couple old white wall tires cut in half (to get them off of old rims) and that layer is half of the sidewall.

  11. I think they call that a rub strip for obvious reasons. Coker charges extra for it.
Why would you want it removed?
It lends a nice touch of class to the damn tire.
Removing it will still show white beneath it by the way.

  13. This is why I prefer bias wide white walls as opposed to radials. Most of the radials that I have seen do not have this little strip.

THOSE are bias wide W/W's AND they are proportionally to wide compared to back WW. IMO

  15. Yes I know they are but was stating I like bias over radial ww's because of the strip. Guess I was unclear. Also haven't seen the back tires to compare proportional difference.

I loved the Continental White Walls 560x15's that came on Volks Bugs in the sixties.

They were PERFECT for the kind of Hot Rods I like. !!!
