wiring a toggle as a turn signal switch

    if you use the double pole double throw with center off switch all you have to do for 4 way flashers is add another toggle switch joining the two circuits . basicly it becomes a jumper from one side to the other thats what i did with the 49

    R & C did a "how to" on this last issue. Used aftermarket components, so I don't know about price, but all the basic info is there.

    If you did not already get your answer here is a simple schematic. It works fine but you need to run auxiliary lamps on the rears as it does not take into account brake light operation. The after market switches have a deal where when they are powered from the brake light, the switch acts to inturpt the brake light power, so it shuts off the power when the brake lamp is lit to flash it. this will not function that way so it needs to have a seperate lamp. I use some motor cycle units mounted on my bumper brackets but there are many ways to approach it.

  5. I believe this is what I did in my van and works great, but I do forget to cancel every once in awhile, but my column switch was gone and this was the easiest option. It does get a little weird braking the habit of flipping your left hand just off the steering wheel to activate to reaching for a switch mounted on or under the dash.
     
  6. Most motorcycle self-cancellers work on a counting principle which utilises a reed switch positioned in the speedometer that counts the rotation of the speedo cable through the magnet activating the reed switch. This, of course, feeds a small computer, though it is usually self-contained.

    Some use rotation of the steering head (not that effective on a bike), or a timer mechanism.

    IMHO, the later models would use a connection to the bike's onboard electronics (read: computer) making them useless for a rod.

    Does anyone know if there is a timing relay that someone could incorporate into something like this. I am a millwright by trade and I see timer relays on momentary switches for some industrial equipment but I am not an electrician so I wonder if it is available in 6 or 12 volt........

    I made my own push button self canceling turn signal with this micro controller prototype card with 4 relays on it.
    I even have a input for the brake switch and programed it so that if you sit at traffic lights with your foot on the brake they keep flashing!

    the bloody hell you say-bloodyjack-that signal set up that you designed/built is too cool-you could sell them here-at least how to build/install one-I have built the standard toggle switch type set up mentioned here. But, nothing as clean and compact as yours-so, now you must share more. Thanks for post.

  12. I've had a '50 and a '51 Chevy and both had the factory turn signal switch. I think that they're cool. Both of them had chrome levers, one of them had a right light that flashed when the signal was on. They are large but the design matches the rest of the interior.

    1157 turn signal bulbs use 2.1 amps for the bright filament and 1 amp for the dim one. Use a switch capable of handling at least 3 amps and it'll out last most of the other things on your dash.

    Or

    Use the microswitches with relays.

    you can just use 2 toggles and 2 t signal flashers and it is cheap and the reason I like it is it not normal.

    I have wired up several of these from Speedway Motors, and they work awesome. They are self canceling and include emergency flashers. All you need are two small momentary switches mounted wherever you want them:

    i posted this in another thread but its right up your alley also.

    hey, go pick up the latest issue of rod and custom (feb) they show a step by step of a toggle switch install. with part numbers from american autowire, the kit they install is called the highway 15 kit, the american autowire switch i used on the crush was easy to wire up, only took 6 connections and the part number is 500148 they call it a toggle turn switch, its the same one they install in the artical too.

    i also have sequential turnsignals on the rear of mine and all lights work and dont affect the brake lights, george
