I was given a 54 merc, my buddy wants to get rid of his inline 6. The mounts look the same, an old timer said they were different. If thats the case I'm gonna run a v8 if I have to change the mounts! Thanks for the help!!!
Here is a good place for info, join the group and you will get plenty of help http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/group.php?groupid=332 Is He giving you a 223 ? if so it won't be hard.Putting a 289-302 is also EZ and can be done with over the counter stock parts.
My thinking was if the mounts were the same I would just slide the six in, and the only motor I have at the house that I could use is a 283.
Sell the 283 you should get enough to buy this http://craigzoom.com/index.php?quer...ate=CA&city=http://bakersfield.craigslist.org This is a 5.0 aka 302 and is a roller cam motor so it is a good builder base, take a trip up to Turlock for the swap on Jan 28th and hunt for some goodies and "Git Er' Done!"
Your prayers have been answered! My buddy called me from Ventura, he picked up a 302 off Craigslist for free. There still see the cross hatching on the cylinder walls, its pretty much new. Bought a c4 and the rest of the things I needed to make it complete. Should be in the car next weekend or the following weekend. I traded the 283, turbo 350 and the mounting kit for a 1405 edlebrock to one of my club mates.
i like sixes. but the 223 would have a tough time pulling the merc. you are better off with the 302. good luck...jack
