  4. My Auto Shop teacher, some 45 years ago tried to tell me that the Proper Name was Water Pump pliers. I got sent to the principal's office when I disagreed in front of the class saying "No, they are Tongue-and-groove pliers, But people like to call them water pump pliers, adjustable pliers, groove-joint pliers, and Channellocks, but those are just nicknames" Dad was amused and told the teacher, sorry but my boy was right.

I beg to differ - This [IMG]
Would be the "rim" (well half of it) to a three piece wheel (they like to call them Barrells too LOL) to make up something like this
    [IMG]

And Cragars for instance have a steel "rim" welded to an Aluminum Center, to create a Wheel ;)

"You Will Respect My Authoriteh!!" Uh-oh, we got us a live one! Heretic!

They even have a name for it now. "Oppositional Defiant Disorder", a sort of pseudo-intellectual catchall, meaning anyone who won't follow official party dogma. You have been warned once already, comrade.

  8. Now this is a hub cap! ;)

Whoever built it had to share a love affair with a 250F Maserati. Bob

  16. Knowing that you are right and standing up for what you know is right isn't ODD.
Not following the official party dogma isn't ODD.
Being a rebel or hoodlum isn't ODD

ODD is looking for the red button after someone says don't push the red button.
ODD is locking the keys in the car on purpose, every day.
ODD is entering the safe space in order to throw a temper tantrum.
ODD is constantly complaining that " it's too far" ,"it's too heavy", "I can't do it"
ODD is arguing that oranges are not orange, or that lemons are "yellows"
ODD is for minors - ODD is not you guys.

We are normal people living in an abnormal world! ;)
Somebody needs to write that down.

RIVETS! Both cars have a ton of rivets in the gas tank and everything that is attached to other things. Workmanship on the Ford was equal to the restored 250F's I've seen. Bob

Why do people say they talked behind your back? Behind your back is in front of you!!

"Free Gift" --> If it wasn't free, would it still be a gift?

  25. I know that calling wheels rims drives a lot of people nuts but I can assure you this is not something new. Around here, I first heard that term to describe wheels sometime in the late 60s. The first time I heard it I was confused and because of that it made an impression on me. Taking into consideration the source where I originally heard it, it may have come from the lowrider guys. In the 70s it became common usage around these parts to say "rims" instead of "wheels."

Language is a fascinating thing because it evolves organically through usage. I am kind of a stickler for spelling and proper usage of words but I also know a "hubcap" is called a "clinktortl" as soon as that becomes the name for it through common usage. What is incorrect in one period of time may be correct in another period. That being said, we can't just make shit up and call things whatever we want or there would be chaos!

Now, if I could just figure out what the Aussies are talking about half the time. Talk about an alternative English lexicon. It's like, "what the fuck language was that, mate?"

Okay, back to polishing my clinktortls.

  28. Oh you mean like what's going on lately?
Making words, redefining words, renamed objects ,,, that sort of chaos right?

  29. Chaos only results when we each make up our own words without agreement. Of course, if we each insist on making up our own words, that would be ODD...and stupid.

  30. Never heard of poverty caps either, when I was young..
We just called 'em .get this...small hubcaps!
