Just laying awake last night thinking about my next project. . . and started wondering about this. why are they called "artillary" wheels? I have also heard the lowriders call them "millitary" wheels. history lesson anyone?
You guys are a riot. But C9 is correct, any heavy spoke wheel (like the wooden spokes on Model Ts) was once referred to as an artillery wheel. Most hot rodders are talking about the stamped spokers from GM, Mopar and some aftermarket companies.
If they don't stop shooting off their mouths they may be fired from the HAMB. You guys are a barrel of laughs. You can really shell out the puns. If you guys don't stop I'll report you.
This type of incendiary wit is the stock and trade of the HAMB I don't think they would butt in and muzzle this type of volley.
They either were or people think they were originally made to some military specification or ordered to a spec. for military vehicles. I think the wheels we call "Rally" wheels that Chevy reintroduced on '67 Corvettes were originally a miltary spec Kelsey Hayes wheel, or so I've been led to believe. You google artillery wheel and you pretty much get a historys of wheels made strong enough to hold up to a cannon's weight and recoil abuse.
