Lots of newbies... Lots of OT... (yeah, I contributed to that) Too much drama. I think we NEED it, a whole MONTH straight. Anyone in agreement? (Ok, a small break so we can post our Paso pix, but thats it!) Officially sanctioned or not, PLEASE post tech's if ya got em. Thanks, J
Tech month would be interesting I suppose, but it's tough - even with the large number of HAMB'rs we have - to fill a week with tech. Even a tech week every month is too often. Not too often for reading, too often to get a bunch of good ones together. Then, if we have tech month, we ain't gonna get much but off topic stuff until next tech month. I'd say tech week about every quarter. That way we'd be immersed in tech to an extent - and there's been some good stuff come out of it - and there would still be the occasional tech post during the (so-called) normal weeks . . . if you could call a week on the HAMB normal.... Interesting is not the right word, but I'll use it anyway - it's interesting to see a well written, multi-page article come up on the board and disappear in an hour or two. Watching the viewer count tells you that it is interesting, but with no one commenting the post sails off into the electronic ether never to be found again. Never to be found in most cases because of titling that doesn't really apply to the post. To repeat an old bitch - from more than a few - indicate what the post is really about right up front. If you're gonna do some clever writing, put it in the post proper. Alternate titles work for me. I'm probably not gonna click on a post titled "Billy Bob drowns a float", but would click on one titled "Holley two barrels nitrocellulouse float problems."
all good points jay. also, a million and one good tech posts have gone down the gurgler because we haven't been diligent in saying to our moderators "hey fuckers, put this in the tech-o-matic!"... or words to that effect!! i hereby resolve to make more "move to tech-O-matic please" requests so that we hang on to and refer back to the good stuff that HAMBers put time into creating.
good point C9, I posted an OT bout gas prices and then turned around and submitted a Tech request to help with fuel economy....well... the OT went 6 pages so far and I had a grand total of 3 replies to the tech request. Drama sells but I would really like to see more tech stuff from the artist here as I am an aspiring striper. I would like to see techs on customizing in all areas as I haven't been around that long and it would be nice to have some tech on shop equipment and tools as well. hint hint
Good points thus far (coming from the KING of 'alternative titles' here! ), but... Even when we DO manage to get some of the better tech posts moved over to the Tech-O-Matic to be preserved for the future use of all registered HAMBers...how often do people go looking there for information before asking something like "Hey! Can a 305 run good?" or "How do I convert from 6v to 12v?". There is a wealth of usefull tech information just over there that collects dust while the same questions get asked over and over again on the main message board! It's funny, but not really "ha ha" funny! I've written a few tech pieces on various engines and one on basic Holley carb handling and one about general electrical system troubleshooting, and I've given up answering the same questions taken care of in those posts again and again on the main board! So, here's a Tech Tip...scan through the Tech-O-Matic once in a while and see if the answer to your question isn't already waiting for you there...THEN ask for help or clarification if you don't see what you need in there. I really make it a point to try and help anyone who has an honest question or problem, but it gets old when you type out the exact same information ten times! I was all but banging my head on the keyboard the other day when someone asked about wringing fuel economy out of a small block Chevy! Check my 305 post...I went to all the trouble of digging out my old notebook to show you the effects that various modifications had on performance AND fuel consumption! The funny part was, the faster the car went, the better it's highway fuel economy got, because I was making it more EFFICIENT without putting in taller gears or looser converters... ...aw, Hell...go read about it THERE! There's some good stuff over in the Tech-O-Matic for those who need a good dose of "how-to" or informative writings detailing a given subject matter. I like to go and read or re-read what's there, because some of the stuff is just so damn cool! I like the ones with pictures, and Paul's whole series on the build-up of his little mod has GOT to go in there as one long article when he's done! Tech Month? You could spend a month absorbing the good stuff you're ignoring! (But I do like a good Tech Week every once in a while...but post 'em when ya got 'em!)
2 problems with tech week. The good stuff comes fast and gets to page 12 in about an hour because nobody responds to tech. Last tech week I never read the winning tech till it was over. Second problem is people tend to hold on to the tech till tech week thus causing the weeks between to be ALL off topic and drama. If your kid's friend gets a new bicycle for his birthday, please don't post it here. We're being buried in shit lately. I don't know about the rest, but I don't give a shit about people finding swap meet snow tires for their 87 Brookwood or a new chain for their Honda 90 trail! Here's some traditional Hot Rod Stuff floating on the HAMB today. I'm always on the lookout for a handy tip, time/money-saver or shortcut. Maybe what we need more than anything is an OT forum. A place for rants, complaints, bicycles, mini-bikes, furniture and decorating hints. Whatever trips your trigger. Perhaps then we all wouldn't spend a lot of time examining posts that have nothing to do with why we gather here. Tech Week ruled. Tech Month sounds good to me. I don't think prizes are really necessary. Kudos from fellow enthusiasts go a long way.
How about giving them a free new HAMB shirt? Then you could sell the rest of us some in time for the last half of the events season. I'll see if I can come up with an extra special top secret whoop-te-doo suprise something to honor the tech week whiner, er, winner. Gimme a week or so to put it together.
I'll stripe a panel to contribute to what ever is given, if you wish. (keep in mind I'm still learning though)
[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] I'll strip [/ QUOTE ] Thats would be nice .... [/ QUOTE ] Sorry bout that "I'll stripe" trust me no one wants the other
MORE DRAMA PLEASE!?! This one's going back to the top.....Maybe one day we can completely chase off the people with the knowledge that made this site worthwhile!! There's more than a few old HAMBers that I no longer see here. I only wish my own contributions could be more valuable. Until then, hypocrasy rules!! HAMBs just going thru a bad patch. It'll get better. Now, how about TECH YEAR?
Got My Vote for that.. I actually have a couple things I've been saving for the next tech week or whatever & I've been looking for that tech post on Z-ing & Kicking up an A Frame... BYC
