hard to tell by the picture , is that an ignition ballast resistor? what does it do?

 

Clean engine and compartment. Either a ballast resistor but mounted as high as it is looks like a switch mounted to light up the engine bay. Why do you think you need one?

 

Some mid 50's GM's had a bracket on the firewall to hold the back of the hood down.

Not sure of what the part does. more info please.

 

That is a steel pad that the roller at the back of the hood on a 53 Buick rolls on.
