Anybody have any information on a 1955/56 (I can't remember which year) Pontiac conv custom two seater called "papoose." Built near Marietta, Georgia during the mid 1960's and featured in Hod Rod. I remember it running around Marietta, Ga and even saw it at The Varsity in downtown Atlanta during the mid 60's. I don't have any involvement in the car except remembering that it was a cool well built custom convertible the size of a 55-57 T-bird. If anybody has info or pics of the car please post them. For me, this is one of those memorable cars, ...you know what I mean!!
I dont know nothing about it... But my Friend Paul Kelly from Australia found a photo of it in the August 1960 issue of Custom Cars.
...that's IT. I've thought about that car since I saw it drive by in Marietta, GA. Many thanks. I'm amazed that your friend in Australia found the pic and YOU are from The Netherlands!!! Ain't the Internet great????
I think there's a mag with that car in it in my bathroom reading pile, a Car Craft from about 1960-61. It's sectioned and shortened but otherwise pretty much stock. Sort of like someone took the original car and left it out in the rain...
The Papoose is still around and still in Marietta, GA although it has been partially disassembled since 1985 or so. It is still owned by the guy who, along with his father, built the car. The pictures in this thread were taken before the owner chopped the top, added 8-lug wheels and made numerous other modifications.
Wasn't it painted bronze and cream at one time, used to see it around the plaza drug store on ponce de leon?
It is still owned by Wynn Guthrie, the original builder's son. He is a friend of my father's. The car is partially disassembled. My father has been trying to get him to put it back together. Wynn is sort of an eccentric. He has a strange affection for Pintos.
I lived in Atlanta around that time, and ofter so the Papoose, often around the varsity....I was told that Pontic built 5 of them for promotional purposes....that may or may not be true.....It was a awesome car!
It was also seen often at plaza drugs at the intersection of ponce de leon and highland ave. This was in the late 50's and there was a white 55 tbird that was always parked with it. Of course i remember it being bronze and cream. Maybe there was two of them?
