Hot Rods What's this tailgate off of?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Radford46, Dec 28, 2014.

  1. My wife got this for me for Christmas off of EBay. I've scoured photos of about all of the pickups from 30's thru the 50's but can't find a match. Has the two stamped upright ribs but no sign of a make logo.
    It's about 49.5" x 14.5". The ribs are 14.5 " apart.
Pretty heavy duty, maybe an old dump bed?
The phone number style is at least 1950's I guess. 7 numbers. image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg

I wonder if it's off an old utility bed? that would make sense both as a plumbing truck, and for having no name stamped in it.

  3. Definitely could be. I know that at least Chevy and GMC made plain gates with painted logos, but I don't think they had the upright ribs.

  4. Perhaps a Knox body, used by IH and after market,,,,,
    or, shop built replacement.

  5. It's pretty smooth and finished to be homemade, but there are/ were some good fabricators around.
It's going to be a cool wall hanger though.

  6. Just checked vintage Knox beds on Google. All on there had Knox stamped in them.

  8. Nah, you just need a good lettering man. Or maybe a pinstriper.

I would call Derick's plumbing and ask them or send a letter and see if they recall it seeing they are still in business since 1956.

  10. looks like a bed door that would fit between work boxes, utility bed type.

  11. Good detective work Fuzz. I'll give them a call.

  12. Could be Turbo, but it does have the chain hook tabs and a place on each side for the bottom hinge.

we didnt get 7 digit phone numbers until 1961 and they were like WE1-2345

  15. I thought so too Verde, but the Chevy and GMC were smooth, no ribs.
And you're right manyol, ours were like DI4-7460,for 344-7460 and people used the word diamond for the DI.

  16. International's had a tailgate like that with no name, not on the Knox beds but on the international beds..want to sell it?

  17. 46international, I'm definitely keeping it. It's on my wall in the living room. She went to that much trouble to look for something that I'd like, definitely a keeper.

  18. 46 international is really a close match.
Tried the phone number for Dericks Plumbing just now. It's not in service. image.jpg image.jpg

The Knox beds and tailgates had a million raised square pads on the inside surfaces. Similar to diamond plate, but a different pattern.

  21. Yeah, it almost looks like a re-bar pattern.

Have you considered using as a back rest on a bench?

  24. That's what it was originally bought for, but it's really too narrow. Ended up buying another one from a 56 Chevy. The wife paid way too much for the two from EBay, but I like them a lot. She had a carpenter friend of mine make the bench on the sly. It's on the front porch. Glad we don't have a neighborhood beautification group. image.jpg
