What's a good straight 6 (carb) & tranny (auto/od) to use building a resto rod?

I'm thinking of modernizing my 40 Pontiac.
I want to be simple carb w/ an overdrive.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks

The Ford 300 shares the 302/351W bellhousing bolt pattern, so there is lots of trans mission options. AOD's, T-5's, M5R2 5 spd, etc.

Any other Ford 6 will require an adaptor to mate a late model OD trans.

Your only option for a bolt up OD trans for an earlier 6 would be to find a 3 spd + OD (Borg-Warner T-85 or T-86 + R10 OD unit) from just about any mid 60's Ford (200 / 250) or Chevy (230 / 250).

    Good Luck

I hear good things about the Ford sixes, but putting a Ford 6 in a Pontiac would ruin it.

the OHC Pontiac 6 would be cool, but probaly hard to find.

if I were to build an old Pontiac I'd have to put a 389-400-428-455 type motor in it.

The Chevy 230/250/292 shares the same pattern as the SBC V8s, so your transmission selection is virtually endless, available, and affordable. Not to mention the 250's are cheap, even for a good runner.

    I'm planning on upgrading my 48 Chevy w/ a 250. :)

My fav is the 300 Ford but in a Poncho I would go with w 250 cheby. Stay away from the integrated head used in the later ones. I think some Pontiacs even came with the 250 Chevy.
Also the 200/250 Fords did come with a 4 speed and I think it was a T4 so a T5 should bolt up. There is an aluminum cross flow head available for the 250 ford and some cool Aussie parts for them.
