I remembered reading the article and couldn't remember which magazine it was in. Lots of digging and reading later I found it.

The article people are talking about is "Drop, Fill, and Peak" from the March 09 issue (the one with the Orbitron on the cover) of Hot Rod Deluxe. It's a great tech article that follows Gene Winfield in how he fills and peaks an axle.

Edit: I forgot to say they look great!

drill the fucker out to the ends...did mine and put 4700 miles on it in '07.

Rolling Bones have 40,000 miles on theirs...no problems.

Those axles are alot tuffer than you think, and it looks bitchin'...

    Maybe.

The axle ends see different loads that the center.

I guess it can last forever if it never hits the right pothole. Or maybe, you will hit that special pothole first time you drive it.

The question is - - do you feel lucky?

    :)

Take a look at how thick a big beam axle is between the kingpin and the spring perch...it's almost a half inch thick...you ain't gonna break it.

Probably not - but I'll bet that you can bend it pretty good if the front wheel catches a pothole or a curb just right.

don't mean to belabor the point, but if you hit a pothole hard enough to bend or break a big beam axle...seems like the tire would go first...especially if it's a bias ply.

If anyone thinks an axle with drilled ends is going to break just remember that 1 3/4" spring everything is riding on.

if you hit a pothle hard enough to bend an axle...you got bigger problems than a bent axle...

But who cares whether the tire blows or even if the wheel bends. You still have steering. Both those things can happen (or not) and still the axle end can bend.

I guess we can agree to disagree on this one. Your car does look nice, though.

But the spring is designed to deflect - the axle isn't. Since the axle ends see different static and dynamic loads than the center portion of the axle (because of where the spring and radius rods attach), the question on the table is if removing that material from the axle ends makes them more likely to bend.

Larry, There you go again.........injecting a bit of reality into a "Alice in Wonderland" discussion. A discussion I might ad that's being carried on by NOT ONE ENGINEER.
Now if they were to bring up how many chords were worn away on that bias ply before it hit the pot hole we'd have a point.:eek::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes

Sure, but your "Big Beam Axle" is maybe eighty years old and full of very large drilled holes. Take out the original 4 banger, and fit a cast iron big block that weighs maybe four times as much, but of course none of that matters, eh ?

I love the drilled look, I wondered about drilling the ends too. Never seen one done before this thread. It looks wicked completely drilled, but I'm thinking that might be a weak link too.

I'm not going to drill the ends I have decided to fill the ends. You don't see many undropped axles that have been filled so that's why I'm going to go that route.

looks like you need to weld in the rust pits and grind it smooth, harvs bones seem to have a little more care to them, but nice job though
