I am putting a GMC 302 in my 1950 Chevy 3100. I have a rebuilt 1956 chevy 3 speed with O/D and an s10 wc t-5 150,000 miles. I am wondering what would be the best choice. The rear axels I have to choose from are a 1956 chevy with 3.36 or an s-10 4x4 rear axel, that is limited slip with 3.73 gears.
im giong to use a t5 behind my 235(i know its not as powerful as your 302) only because i have not located a good 3spd od around here.the 3spd would be easier to hook up and will probably handle more torque than the s10 t5.I like the older rear better for the same reason plus it looks cooler.
For my '37 Chevy 2Dr sedan with a GMC 302, I'm using a Nova 8.5" 10 bolt rear with 3.73 gears and a Saginaw 4 speed trans with an overdrive added from a 3 speed. It is still under construction. For an older look and feel, the '56 rear and 3 spd OD should work great. If the engine is close to stock and the tires are not too big, the 3.36 gears and OD may make for a great cruiser.
it depends what you are doing with the car. racing, cruzing, hot roding stocker? Most common is the T5 setup. Camaro units will bolt up. S-10 tailshafts puts the shifter close to OG. (see inliner.org website for more info) I have seen sags both 4 and 3 spd work well. (Patrick's has the adapter to close drive too) Muncies work well both 3 and 4 spds. Buffalo and Langdon have adapters for TH350, powerglide, 700R4. I will be using a BW T-10 in my race 302 sedan. I have a stock 3 spd in my roadster. Will be converting to the t5 setup in my roadster. (same as above).
