I suppose i should have considered this more closely before i took the car apart, but i was wondering is anyone knows exactly what the "Grey Putty" used on 1959 Chevrolet (and i assume on all GM cars) around the fixed windows? Specifically those on a wagon, and perhaps on the back quarter windows on 4 door sedans. it was in a lot of places including on the back of some of the rear trim. It reminds me of the stuff my dad used on the windows on out house in the winter. Yes i did some searches, but am not sure what it would be called. Thanks in advance for any information from those who have already figure it out.
I'm not sure either, we called it Dumm Dumm. If you need to replace it try the putty tape they sell for sealing trailer windows and seams.
its called Dum Dum & its been on Cars a Long Time its on my 50 Merc just my 3.5 cents mabey there is another word for it!
Glazing putty is what is used to hold in loose glass, due to it being in a car, the automotive version of it would likely be stickier, as you can't really drive points in to the metal to retain the glass...
I think you are referring to "Butyl Tape". It held the glass in on older vehicals. Still used on some newer cars and trucks. Comes in a roll, in different widths.
I've been doing auto glass for 47 years and have never found or heard of anyone producing the stuff G.M used in the 50's and early 60's. butyl (not the tape) is a suitable substitute.
