I was working on my boat at the marina(inside) when they came and sent us all home until Apr. 13. Man I was so close to being finished.

Worked some more on my new wiring harness. Cranked it for the 1st time with a keyswitch. Had a pushbutton switch before and just wired to crank. Still have a lot to do but I can move it around again. 20200327_143304.jpg

  5. Slow with the pictures; but the Monday I cut and crimped a couple A/C hoses for the '33, ran out of fittings before I got very far. Next I put the wiper motor on the '47; then figured out I had no idea where the rubber gaskets for the towers were; then I worried that maybe I never had it place with the heater. Dug out the heater and ran up to the shop with it the Wednesday and hung it on the firewall. It all fit together, so I put the dash on so I could trim the upper corners that I had forgotten to do sometime in the past. Gave up looking for the tower pads, found some rubber washers that will probably work better anyways. Yesterday I made a stand for the trunk lid and DA'ed of a few years worth of crud. Attacked with a shrinking disc today and eliminated a few lumps. Wish there were more access holes on the backside to ding it out better.

  7. Gimpy, don’t forget to clean out the inter cooler (we call it a charge air cooler) if it has one. I am guessing her car is gasoline powered, but I have seen a very nice road tractor literally get totaled when the goofball roadside mechanics replaced a turbo on a Cummins and didn’t clean the oil from the CAC. The engine sucked up the oil and oversped. By the time the driver got it shut down, the engine had blown up and ripped itself from the chassis.

Today I dragged a wheel and a Saginaw power steering reservoir over to a friend's shop.

"Moved" the valve stem hole to correct a mismatch in the wheel set, and welded two AN -6 return fittings on the power steering pump reservoir. 90797717_3097155320317395_6749598233024004096_o.jpg

I shouldn't post this, but it's an example of the depths to which some of us can sink. I'm pulling the engine out of my wife's former car, a 2013 Fiat. At least 2 days for me to get it out, lord only knows how long to get another engine back in there:

Finally reached a point where this can go back on tires and off jackstands.

May I suggest you get some 1/2 plate/scrap, and just work on your beads. Use a "little cursof E" motion moving along. Just turn the heat up-most likely will not penetrate and the bead will be on top-but will get you into a good habit.

Now with thin metal like you have, you really don't want to run a continuous weld anyways.,

It's a lot easier to start on thick stuff and work your way down, but I was raised with a stick welder so using a wire welder was easier to learn. Best of luck!

I’m ok on thicker stuff. New to trying thin sheet metal.

Learn to tack the thin stuff and then flip it over, make sure you are going all the way through.

It looks like your welds are laying on top of the metal, what does the backside look like?

OK, so I snipped a pic of the back side and have circled poor/no penetration, kinda comparing to your topside pic, easy to see why. Take a look, see if you understand it.

  29. I dilly dawdled on the Henry J, figuring out where I wanted my fuel regulator and then making a simple bracket for it, I'll add a few lightening holes and polish it tomorrow since my knee was getting to swollen to be on it any longer today.
