Building up a 327 chevy motor, looking to buy a carb for it. I was going to run edelbrock because that is what i ran on my 53's 283 chev engine. I put a 600cfm carb on it and once in awhile it will bog down just a litte bit every so often. But other than that it runs soooooo good. that engine starts up right away even in the winter time and will drive me from here to NY. but what do YOU recomend putting on a bone stock 327 chevy?
If you have a more "stock" motor I would go with the 550. If you have a nice cam, headers and some minor head work go with the 600.
the car was my dads, (not totally hamb friendly), and has 33000 original miles on it, it isnt bored up at all. I just know that my edelbrock combo on my 283 does really well so i thought id go the same route. its just a driver tho, not a racer at all.
when would 283 bog down? what model carb? condition of carb/engine/trans? what are you doing to 327/with what trans in what car?
i have a pretty stock 327 in my daily driver. was in my cousins s-10 a decade or so ago, then was pulled and sat in a barn for maybe 5 or so years till a few years ago it went in. an old tired motor with a mild cam and some heart...i use a 550 edelbrock on a performer intake. when im hammerin it down it seems that even the 550 is a bit too much fuel for the stock heads. acts like she wants more air. the bonus i think is the edelbrocks reliability and consistency. car always fires right up and hardly ever has needed adjustment. the motor i had in the daily before the 327 was a mid 90s stock 350 with the vortex? heads. dont remember the intake but it was a dual plenum and i used a 650holley on it. you definitely can tell a diference between how this motor ran and how the 327 runs. the top end of this motor was more "adept" at handling alot of fuel/air mix and capable of burning it. i think this had alot to do not only with the carb (which being a holley always liked getting rebuilt in the spring), but also the heads/intake could move it easier and more efficiently. so, imho, stock heads, stock intake = 550 or maybe even a 500 (though that may be pushing it). your 283? yeah, a bit too much carb if you ask me. again a 550 i think would be well suited.
just at take off sometimes, its only happend like maybe 6 times ever, and on the 283 its a 600cfm and it was a remanufactured one from jegs. and i have a turbo 350 tranny with it. the 327 has a 4 speed original trans. stock cam, stock heads, mechanical fuel pump
With the info stated, I voted 600...but I ain't no expert. I am running a 550 Elelbrock on my 283 bored .60, and seems to be about right... Cheers...........
thanks mcphipp, do you think maybe even a 500 would be better on my 283? i cant seem to find 550 edelbrock carbs on jegs on summit
Right. Depends, for one thing, whether it would be vacuum or mechanical secondaries (you are talking 4 bbl, right?). Anyway, a 600 cfm vacuum secondary should work fine.
If you already have a 600 on the 283 try changing the metering rods and jets. Do the spark plugs look like it is running rich?
sorry guys for the slow responses. im doing research in my other open tab. yeah its vacuumand yes 4 bbl
I voted 600 CFM for the 327 but having run 283's in the past with the 500 CFM AFB's (aka early Edelbrock) they worked really well providing you used the right intake manifold.
You want a traditional carb or any one that works? Non-traditional, I'd probably use a QuadraJet on both engines. For a more "traditional" choice I'd go with a 390 Holley on the 283 and a 450 on the 327 but nothing bigger than a 600 if you go with anything other than a Q-Jet. I had a 600 Holley on a stock 283 and I got it to "work" pretty well but it was still just too much carb. It would have worked a lot better with a smaller carb. If I could get a manifold that wouldn't require an adapter my Stude's 289 would have a Q-Jet on it right now. I replaced the 500 Edelbrock on it with a 390 Holley 4160 4 bbl. instead and it really likes it. Later on it's getting dual feed float bowls just for looks. I'll give the Edelbrock another chance on something bigger that gets driven more frequently.
ok well, the polls show that 600 is the winner, and since it is a little cheaper to get a 600, i think ill go with that, and maybe just build it up a little with a bigger cam and some headers. but i think a 600 will do good. thanks guys for the info.
On a 600 vac secondary, if the float levels are set higher than level, will that over-fuel the heads.
My personal suggestion would be to take the 600 you now have and put it on the 327 and get a Eddy 500 and put it on the 283. Then everyone will be happy, including your motors.
For perfectly stock 283 and 327 engine; virtually impossible to do better than the original carb for the engine. An exception would be if the 327 is early enough to have a square bore carb, then a later spread-bore intake and O.E. 327 Q-Jet would be an improvement. Make sure you get the proper carb for your transmission type (auto or manual). Yes, the newer A.M. carbs may be easier; and will certainly impress the 16 year olds at the car show with your hood open, but on a perfectly stock engine, will not run as well as the original. If you modify the engine, the above recommendations might (or might not, depending on the mods) change. Jon.

I would think 600 for the 283 and 650 for the 327. For all weather drivability I have had good luck with the electric choke Edelbrock's. If the best E.T. is your thing, a 750 Holley vacuum secondary carb only uses what it needs as far as the secondary goes. The secondary's are tunable with a spring change.
I use twin 600 edelbrocks on my 27 trck roadster...327 .Has been on there for 12 years and I love it!
