History welding equipment from the past

    Anyone remember all those old G.E's, Hobarts, we called "Coffee Grinders"??----Late 40's, early 50's.
    Also the old heavy "Birdsells"?

  3. Tofords...That is an old Carbide generator,,,add carbide pellets into the water and it generates Acetlene gas...Any of you
    "older " guys ever have a carbide Miners lantern in your youth??? Carbide generatort works the same way...same as old carbide headlights in the early 1900s....with the generator(carbide) sitting on the running board.

    Back in early 60's I bought this carbon arc torch, $14.95 out of an ad in Pop Science....Not a weldr per say but a electric heat source and one could do pretty good brazing with it with some practice..Mom would complain that the lights would dim [mom complained about most of what I did] so I gave her the usual not to worry line..Made alot of karts, mini bikes, and other do-dads..Worked fine for years till I got a real torch set...

    Looks like something the Homeland Security folks might get in a panic over. I still have my old Sears Craftsman Buzz Box arc welder I bought used at least 40 years ago.

    My friend just recently bought this old welding truck. The welder is powered by a Chrysler flat 6.
