Yes - he was drag racing it at that time. We are all from San Antonio and they use to race down the Randolph Field & Martindale Air Field flight lines. Imagine getting on an air force base these days and running down the flight line. My grandfathers name is Richard Foster and he ran with Harold Lozano (Lozano Brothers Porting), Bud Ward, Nylic Tatum. They were the start if the Rebels Race Club of San Antonio and were part of the Alamo Timing Association and NHRA. Actually have some video from the 50's of them racing. Thanks for the info and I'm still trying to find out more information about his car and trying to locate one simular to it.

Our own Racer5c had the honor of driving for AJ Watson. I haven't seen him in a while but it is not uncommon to see Mr. Watson at the Mcdonalds in Speedway at lunch time.

Those are some great pictures Josh.

Very nice Griddle, TQs were never too popular around these parts, so I don't know a lot about them, but here's a link to guys who are quite into vintage TQs. (can be kinda slow loading) http://www.vintagetqmidgets.com/Home_Page.php

I agree with buildy.. There were a lot more midgets that looked like that than the usual High dollar Kurtis stuff you see a lot. Very cool car.

A kentucky open wheel find is kinda rare.. Once you cross that river, You can't find a sprint car even if you had "Eldora's wall" helping you!:D That Sum bitch has "found" and made contact with hundreds.. if not thousands!

(just a little open wheel humor that only us sprint car geeks will get)

Them Briars either won or buried them in the turn two wall. Maddest I ever saw Ol' Earl was when he unearthed one in the middle of 1-2 when he was doing the final grade on a Big Saturday Night.

Pete Schmidt sure fielded some fine looking rides back then.

I need some help... this midget is going to be auctioned tomorrow so time is of the essence. Does anyone recognize the car [sorry for the poor quality pics cell phone you know] It's a HAL motor and as far as I can tell most of the major pieces are present. I wasn't able to locate the builder's tag, or even if there was one. It looks like a Mod.A rear and there is an in/out box. I located some paperwork that showed Eddie Zaluckie getting ready to drive a car very similiar to this one. Any thoughts, ideas, or advice???
    Blessings,

Advice?... bid high and bid often. Seriously, I don't have a clue to it's history, but with that HAL conversion, it's probably going to attract a lot of interest.
Maybe try and contact someone from this Fla. outfit. Of course, if they don't already know about the auction they will, and if they do, they might be kinda tight lipped. ?? http://www.daararacing.com/

    Good luck.

My advise.. Forget about the Midget! BID ON THE NON-CAGE SPRINTER next to it..:D:D

The midget is pretty cool. It's all about who's there bidding. If I had to guess.. on the high end, it could bring $8000-$10,000 I don't think it will go that high though. If I had to guess, $6500 would but it.

Of coarse.. I could be way off. I have been before!:D

Let me know what the sprinter brings.

I know I should have taken more pics, but we slipped in as they were setting up. According to the auction flyer the sprinter next to the midget is supposed to be an AJ Watson car. I didn't check it real close because I was so intrigued by the HAL... Security eventually closed in so our recon mission was scrubbed. Oh well, tomorrow is the day so I'll get plenty of shots of everything there.

Good luck bidding on that midget. Cars that complete are hard to come buy. Its also neat to see a car that is different , not a KK copy with a v8 60.

I am watching the USAC race from Manzi on Usac.com. Go Jerry Coons Jr. and the whole Hoffman racing team. They can clinch the 2008 Usac sprint championship tonight. 30+ years from now we will be looking for the car Jerry drove tonight for a restoration project.

That Ward car is great. Looks like it would be a fairly easy restoration. Any history on it?

Here's some shots of the Schmidt car from '59 taken at Bonneville this year. Jim Lattin currently owns it and is planning to restore it to its 1959 front row glory after setting records this year. I talked to Jim at great length about he car. He was surprised that I recognized it as a Kusma car. Most think Epperly, watson, or Kurtis. He had many great stories about finding Kusma and having help rebuild the car. Said Kuzma had many many stories about racing but even more about the women he chased at the same time!
