I have to ditto Josh's observation of the Sat. nite racing at the 'burg. The track was super rough, but the sprint show was outstanding. The facility is unbelieveable. I wonder how many people lost their ass at the casino to pay for it? Their loss our gain!

I was their with my wife and BZNeil, and talked with Josh and his Mom and Dad... family entertainment at its best.

Hey, guys. Just got back to the board after getting my new computer up and running. I missed it. BAD. Corngrower, I hope you don't mind, I take some of your pics and post them on my corner of usadragracingchat.com. Mos of the drag racers from your area are familiar with you, and they dig it. They asked me to be the ipso-facto "oval" and history rep for the site some time back. The photo of your dad's shop was a big hit.

    Don't mind at all!

I love showing that Shop picture to old drag racers cause they IMEDIATLY say, "WHere did you get those Willy's doors off of THOSE cars!" ...There fakes just to play with people.:D

For a whole summer I carried that Stone, Woods and Cook door in the back of my C-dan to shows, and would just throw my stuff in on it, like I didn't know it was there... Guys would shit! "What are you doing!! Do you know what that is!!" I did it the next summer with the "Big John" door and some guys started to figure it out.:p

No donuts.. I found out that, Louisville.. being a state park, means STATE COPS! They didn't think donuts were as cool as I did.:D

My plans changed.. Not going to the Miller Meet, I'll be at the burg. Last night was killer. My man Jon Stanbro started 16th and charged to third only to have a right rear explode coming out of two. As dad used to say when we would loose a tire.. "We gotta quit buying that cheap air.. lets get the good stuff!":D

Dad always had a way of easing the tension of a hard night of racing.

So... I'll see a few of you down there tonight! DRIVE YOUR HOT ROD!! We all park on the back stretch. GREAT SEATS!! It cost an extra ten bucks to get you hot rod in there, but it worth it.

  23. First post. A friend let me know about this particular thread and it's a great one. So here's a link to a bunch of post-WW2 sprint cars/big cars from Langford Speedway in Victoria, BC, Canada. They had many cars from Seattle and Portland come up to help the locals have a good Saturday night show.

    http://members.shaw.ca/gforce-2/Langford_Speedway.html

Just click the page and then individual photos. All come from around 1947 and 1948.
    cheers,

  25. Glad there's some things of interest for you.

The Howard Stanley rear-engined car was the first of two built by legendary Victoria mechanic Jack Smith. He raced in the 1920s, formed the club that built and ran Langford Speedway, and built a number of race cars over the years. He passed away in the mid-1970s and was posthumously entered into the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame a couple years ago.

A good bit of info on Jack can be found here:

    http://www.victoriaautoracinghalloffame.com/jacksmith/jacksmith.html

A page as well on Grant King who started building sprint cars back when he was in high school:

    http://www.victoriaautoracinghalloffame.com/grantking/grantking.html

The City of Tacoma car was owned by Leo Dobry, who had an entry or two in the Indianapolis 500 back then. Not sure if that's the Indy car for exhibition purposes or what. Lots of bucks behind his cars.
    cheers,

I recently made a GOOD friend who has been involved with everything from Half Moon Bay to the INDY 500 and he let me scan some pictures from his scrapbook. The scrapbooks earliest date is 1953 and ends in 1961, 'John' has been involved in everything from 'Hardtops', Midgets, 'Open Comp Modifieds', Indy Cars, Stock Cars, NASCAR, not to mention Customs and Drag Racing. I would of never guessed his lifes journey when I first met him, goes to show you never know! All the photos are from newspapers and I tried to keep them as large as possible. I thought you guys might enjoy and I have LOTS more if you would like them posted. There are alot of 'death' clippings I have choose not to post as I was unsure how they would be recieved, I respect those who have died doing what they loved, but then again they might want to be remembered, your call. Living in todays 'Politically Correct' world I can actually appreciate how 'Matter of Fact' it used to be. You can right click on the thumb nails, 'Open Link' and then enlarge the clippings. Enjoy, Rocky
