Rootie would appear to be right on the money...

In the Tom Saal book about Andy Dunlop it was mentioned that the Central Excavating car was sold to George Bignotti (Retzloff), and then became 'The City of Syracuse' entry in 1969 driven by George Snider. Andy mentions that he he saw the car at Syracuse later, with a Chevy under the hood, but couldn't recall the owner.

Interesting is that Dunlop is oftern listed as the 'builder' of the car, but he points out that is was actually a 'lightweight' Watson-built car...

BTW... This is a GREAT book that really gives the reader a feel for what the champ car trail was like in the 1950's and '60's. I grew up in that era, but the volume of driver deaths that occurred is still sobering.

Ralph at Greenfield Gallery is very reasonable. I've purchased numerous USAC and IMCA sprint car photos from him in the $10 to $15 range. They've all been excellent quality...

The Andy Dunlap book, "Damn Few Died in Bed" is a must read for everyone on this forum. It is one of my favorites. It really tells the story of champ cars back then, a great resource for those of us who did not live in those times.

The John Gerber biography "Outlaw Racer" (still available) is the real primer for all racers and fans to understand how this whole thing got started.

All racers today should have to read this book and pass a test on it before they are allowed to participate. Sort of like passing American History in school.

Thanks for posting the picture of the Schmidt car.

I'd bet that Billy Earl is looking over the edge and tipping a Black Label in tribute to those who restored the car that was his livihood for years.

Sad news from Duke Cook, Dee jones was given the white flag with 48 hrs. to go. Cancer has the big guy down to 125lbs. He was an original "tough guy" driving sprint cars, not like todays kids.

Sorry to haer about Dee. The only time I had the chace to meet Dee and takl to him was at Joie Ray's house. Dee was flying in town and Joie picked him up. Joie invited Charlie Masters my wife and me down to enjoy the home cooked fish fry at Joies house. Had a great time talking with Dee [plus the food was great], know Charlie and Dee had a good time, as they raced against each other a lot.
May Dee be blessed, he will be missed.

With the success that the Kuzma dirt cars had I had always been curious why the Kuzma roadsters were not more succesfull. Yea I know , dirt cars with Jimmy Bryan and Johnny Thomson at the controls are gonna' run well, but... I subsequently had a good conversation with Len Sutton, who was a golfing buddy of Mr. Kuzma and had some success I believe with the Kuzma dirt cars. I asked what he thought and Len's thoughts were that the Kuzma roadsters chassis was not rigid enough, making chassis adjustment a real iffy process. I have always thought that the early Kuzma roadsters were the most attactive "Speedway" cars of that era until the "Lay down" Salih and Epperly's appeared. Oh, and you can't fault a guy with a glass of Black Label in his hand, my favorite as well.

I spoke to Dee and Phyllis last week and was able to send him some photos of his rookie test at Indy which Phyllis said raised his spirits somewhat.
A truly all round competitor, and as he said "I just loved to race!!"

Was this the car that Dick Linder was scheduled to drive at Indy in 1959?
