Spent a day last week At Balboa in Newport Beach. Not the same as I remember in the 50's, 60's and 70's. Some of the original charm is sparingly preserved. Did not go for a frozen banana but chose a Balboa Bar ice cream instead. Also had a nice meal at the old Crab Cooker which kind of still looked the same inside to me.

It's a boat, you can see part of the hull underneath the Buick body. The engine in the back seat/trunk area. Buick body is so heavy it almost looks like it's ready to sink the hull. As said..."looks like we're gonna need a bigger boat"

    Hey RM,
Wow, that was a long way to go from NY. But, I am sure it got you out of the real cold area back east. We are having a slight So Cal cold spell, 40 in the morning and 60-64 in the day near the beach. Rain is predicted for the coming week.

As teenagers, we rode that ferry so many times. It was fun to be on the water in your car. Lowered cars had a difficult time getting on and getting off was horrendous. Many years later, when our grand daughter was little, her favorite beach was right to the left of the Balboa Pier. We spent many days from age 2 all the way to 8 years old. The beach is actually kind of dangerous as under the water, it drops off to overhead within 10 feet of going into the white water.

We spent many hours playing in the sand. Her favorite sand toy was a purple Matchbox car for those off road, sandy, castle roads. She was always intrigued by the funky ferry ride across the channel. That place holds a warm memory for all of us.

The Crab Cooker has stayed relatively the same since it opened years ago. It was a fun place to drive on dates, as it was authentic seafood in a great environment. Yes, the whole Newport/Balboa area has changed over the years, except for the ferry and the small shops on the island.
